Ugliest Starship

I keep wondering, since a gravitic drive isn't a reaction jet, what are all those big often glowing structures on the aft side of Traveller ships? Could they be.... exhaust ports?

In Traveller 4, Marc (IIRC, it was Marc, it might have been another writer) was saying that the grav plates do produce some sort of exhaust. I don't remember exactly how it was phrased, but it was something along the lines that they produce glowing particles in the opposite direction of their travel or something, but they don't actually produce thrust.

No idea if that is still canon or canon in MongTrav or whatever.

This is pretty much how I deal with it. The glow is just a side effect of the technology but it produces no thrust and no appreciable heat. The only difference I make is that the glow isn't in the direction of the thrust, but comes from what look like "exhaust nozzles" at the rear of the ship, though you could put them anywhere you want to and it won't effect the working o f the technology in any way. Everyone knows that spaceships HAVE to have glowy bits on their tail :)

I've always liked the Sydkai detached cruiser. Not sure what it is that attracts me to it. Perhaps the roll bar.

Essentially then those exhaust ports are a type of waste energy sink technology we aren't familiar with. They are placed aft so the waste doesn't 'wash' over the ship as it passes. Might explain why images make them look fairly solid rather than a tube and can be round or rectangular.

Those are also cool uglies, Shawn.
Though I will admit that I'm not a big fan of the Modular Cutter, though. The way the modules are handled never sat right with me, though I'm not sure I can explain why. Something about it being an external system and not an internal one...

I'd just think that after TL 11 or so they'd figure out a new way to do it. ;) But that's my game, on the understanding that your game is different.

I have a feeling loadouts aren't changed while in combat so time is less an issue. A well trained pilot is sufficiently efficient with the routine. The loadout would be decided depending on the mission and ordered well beforehand.

While going through my old Traveller book, I believe I found THE ugliest ship, the Leviathan. It's a huge 1800 ton hulking block of tiered metal.

Yeah, that's kinda really ugly.

Did you outfox us again?
