Two questions about character creation

Hi everyone.
I have two (easy) questions about character creation which always bugged me.

- When you need to roll a skill during character creation, do you jus roll the skill or skill + ability?
The example character roll skill + ability which is the way I have done it too, but now I have seen that in High Guard some event specifically list a skill + ability and some just a skill.

- When you fail survival and roll on the Misshap table and the event rolled specifically says that you do not need to leave the career what takes precedence? The failed survival roll or the event? (And what happend when you roll on the Misshap table because of an event and the rolled entry says you leave the career?)

Thanks for any clarifications you can give.

I'd play it like you, Skill + ability, unless the roll explicitly calls for a pure skill roll.

- When you fail survival and roll on the Misshap table and the event rolled specifically says that you do not need to leave the career what takes precedence? The failed survival roll or the event? (And what happend when you roll on the Misshap table because of an event and the rolled entry says you leave the career?)

The specific event that spares you from leaving should take precedence, IMHO. If your event roll forces you to roll mishap, and that result says leave, I'd say you leave.

I have ruled that:
fail survival and you roll on the mishap table but are ejected regardless of "event"

Roll event 2 or 11 (depending on table) roll on the mishap table and you may be ejected if called for.

The skill plus ability (stat mod #, right?), that is how I play that unless the task check says differently.

- When you fail survival and roll on the Misshap table and the event rolled specifically says that you do not need to leave the career what takes precedence? The failed survival roll or the event? The event on the mishap table? Where it states you don't need to leave the career, then you don't need to leave the career. If you roll on the mishap table because of an event, and the mishap table says leave, then you leave that career.

It's one thing if the characteristic to be used in the skill check is given - of course use it.

For a skill check that isn't detailed can you use a characteristic? Can you use timing? Can you use assistance or tools?

The chargen events are not too detailed. For those that do use a characteristic, which do you use? Players will likely come up with some plausible reason to use of the characteristic they have the best DM in. I saw somewhere a list of all the skills and their primary characteristic. Perhaps a GM should come up with such if they know that their play group is the type to get caught up in arguing over things.

Thats the question.
I found one event which requires you to roll battle dress. No idea what characteristic I would even use.

Just role-play it out. Players describing what their characters are doing will bring out what skills/tools to roll for, if a roll is necessary.
