I am going to be driving out to Monterrey, CA from Altoona, PA in a couple weeks, and now that I have a course decided, I was curious if any of you knew of good gamestores where I could get in a game of ACTA on the way...

I am stopping in Cleveland, OH my first night out. That's a Fri.
Then on to somewhere near Davenport, Iowa Saturday night
Then off to approximately Kearney, Nebraska
Monday night is a stop around Rawlins, Wyoming
Then Elko, NV on Tuesday
and, finally, Monterrey, where I'll be spending a week and have a lot of early afternoon time on my hands...

I say, "somewhere near" for all of those except Cleveland and Monterrey because at 450 miles a day, I have plenty of time to go a little bit out of the way for a game...

only 450 miles a day? you're not much for long drives are you
I think I've actually stayed in Rawlings...or was it Laramie? either way, they're both VERY small and I don't think you'll find much there.

You know, I was originally planning to take I-70 on my way out there, but seeing as this is going to be Feb when I make this run, I decided to follow the prevailing advice and not risk it...

Sounds good. I know that there used to be a good game store down there (I don't know if it still exists).

Now, if you ever get up to the San Jose/ Santa Clara area, check out Game Kastle! We play on Wednesday nights and Saturdays!

Wyoming can probably be just as bad. When I drove that stretch of I-80 between Cheyenne and Salt Lake City (back in '92) there are some very lonely stretches of road. there are parts where you can travel 80+ miles with no services. No big deal in the spring, but february....this will also take you through the highest part of I-80, 8600+ feet in elevation.

Aren't you guys limited to 50mph on your roads too? That's going to be a *long* drive... I have to drive about 300 miles tomorrow but at 70mph that's only half a day. Almost makes me wonder if with the amount of petrol (sorry, "gas") you'll be using, if it wouldn't be worth flying instead?

with the price of diesel at the moment, i wish i could fly to swindon at weekend.

thats one long drive for a holiday man, hope it's worth it and you get the games in

Most roads in the open country allow up to 65 mph legally, and you can push up to 85 and expect the majority of cops to ignore you. Even if they do they often reduce the speed for the ticket. I got nabbed once in pensylvania (sp?) doing about 105 and the very nice officer only gave me the ticket for 80 (55 zone so was just under him having to take me in for reckless). I was young and not so smart back then.

I typically roll at 75. But you aren't too far off. It is restricted to 55 within city limits.

Anyway, I don't really have all that many choices when it comes to travel between here and there. I could take I-90 and go WAY out of my way and travel right along the Canadian border...
I-80 is the most direct route, and yeah, it's going to be cold with some high elevation and some snow risk
I-70 goes right through the heart of the Rockies and then I'd have to pick up I-15 and swing South of the Sierra Nevadas, which is something of approx a 200 mile detour.
And then there's I-40 which is almost as far out of the way as 90, but is to the South, so it avoids most of the snow and mountain issues...

That's why I settled on 80.

Rural interstates can be as high as 70mph (posted) at the states option, but 65 is probably the dominant speed. Some states keep it at 55mph almost everywhere. I remember there's a big sign at the Oregon-California border on I-5 informing of the speed limit drop to 55mph (as you travel north). I have to make a drive up to Portland this weekend (about 560 miles to where I'm headed) and I can easily do that with one break for gas. Just pack snacks and sodas, and a decent lunch (pack some sandwiches from the night before. Get an early enough start and I can be north of Redding before rush hour hits up there (kind of a big deal thatnks to the emergency bridge replacement construction on the Pit River Bridge, over Lake Shasta, which has the interstate down to 1 lane each direction)
Typically I drive just a tad faster than the flow, which is about 7mph over the limit here. not much and usually police won't bother with you.
Bear in mind that not all cops are created equal. a different cop in the same state might have given a much harsher fine to the above example (105 in a 55?) and excessive speeding of that nature in california will likely result in a reckless driving citation as well.
I advise you to check the route using the internet. Scheduled construction activity is typically posted to the state's department of transportation website (look for something like "road conditions") and here you'll find things like ramp closures, recurring delay due to construction, etc. The telephone "511" system should keep you up to date on things like road closures, chain controls, etc, which can easily happen in the winter. Here in my district (I work for CA's DOT) Highway 50 has portions that are closed for avalanche control during/after winter storms.
And Derina's right - don't push yourself. If you're not used to driving long distances, its a very, very bad thing to drive tired. If you need a break, pull over somewhere. I've seen a couple accident reports come across my desk where drivers caused accidents with (some with fatalaties I'm sorry to say) because they fell asleep at the wheel.
My best advice for driving long distances, is to get an early start. Don't stay up late. get up at 5:30. Watch the weather channel, hit the continental breakfast, and get on the road. You can easily get in 300 miles before lunch. If you stop for lunch at a restaruant, fill up your tank before you get back on the road. This will minimize your number of stops.

Enjoy the trip!

we used to call that "Montana" (slightly larger than Germany  )
They used to have a speed limit during daylight hours of "Within Reason" but I think that's been done away with now...

Thanks for the driving advice. I am kind of familiar with long-distance hauls having been a trucker for the Army and being an Army Recruiter for the last 3 years. Believe me, I can drive long distances.
And even all that aside, I have far more than my share of distance driving experience, starting with the first time I was ever alone in a car and doing a 2k mile trip in 2 days, and the 1700 mile trip from VA to Fort Sam Houston, TX a couple years later.

What I was asking about though, and why I posted this thread here instead of in the Off Topic forum was:
Does anyone know of any good Gaming Stores along my route (not 2 hours down another highway, thanks for the invite, though dar'kar) where I could stop for an evening of CBT of B5?

Sice doesnt matter :D (sorry for off-topic)

Interstated speed limits from Nebraska through Nevada is 75mph except through bigger towns (like Cheyenne).

The various state troopers will leave you alone until you get close to 10mph over the limit. So get your favorite books on tape and set the cruise control at 80mph and fly baby fly!!! 8)

I need to find a copy of World War Z on tape...

So, no other suggested stps for gaming than Salt Lake? Nobody here lives along that route?

you might find some people in Chicago surely?
there's supposed to be a good gaming place around there...but it wasn't a city on your list.

Couple of good stores, though ACtA has really suffered locally with second edition.

I didn't mention it for the reason you said, wasn't on his list.
