Traveller v2 backwards compatibility

Banded Mongoose
Can I get an official answer about what will be fully compatible, with the new v2 rules, that Mongoose has already released for Traveller?

For example is the new Mercenary v2 fully compatible? Will the vehicle book and 760 patrons be fully compatible? What about the character gen books like scoundrel and scout? I assume the ships in these books will not be compatible so I guess not.

Will everything that has already been released need some conversion?

Why is a new version of CSC being drafted does this mean that he old one will not be compatible?

Just so I know whether to buy anything or nothing till after March. At the moment I am sticking with what I have got which is about four books now that I am happy with. I would like to buy Merc v2 but would this be pointless now?

On the What's to become of Mercenary 2nd Ed? thread this official answer was given for Merc 2....

Certainly some of the ideas in Merc II made their way into the new core rules.

At some point I would like to revisit Mercenary and really expand the idea of a dedicated mercenary-based campaign. However, I must be at pains to point out, there are no set plans to do so. Mercenary is not in the core line up, nor is there room for it in 2016. Might not even happen in 2017.

But it is on my 'wish' list.

Think of it as yet another version of Traveller. VERY close to the original mongoose version. Easily convertible with the caveat that I've not seen ship construction yet.

Important question: is there some reason you think you will be switching to the new version?

To me, the new version is for new players, people that just have to have everything Traveller, and GM's that have some need to sometimes merge players from closely related versions. My recommendation to others is stick with the first version if you have a play group that enjoys it. If you like to house rule or have options, keep an eye out for discussion of the upcoming Traveller Companion which while for the new version, will likely have lots of good ideas ready to use in the first Mongoose version too.

I still have Mongoose Mercenary 1st edition. Most of it works with MgT2 without doing any converting. It depends on the amount of crunch though that players decide to bring to their game sessions. Some tweaking with the combat round, and with vehicle stats. If a referee is comfortable with adding new skills for their Traveller games, or adding new weapons to the game, it's not a problem using any previously published Traveller book or supplement with MgT2. Unless... it's from GURPS. Which means more work required.

I've been introducing elements of MgT2 into an existing MgT1 campaign (Secrets of the Ancients). I had a few issues with the speed and timing of the Skills training rules, but nothing else bad to report - we didn't have to generate new characters or anything like that. Generally, the characters and stuff look the same on paper but the way you use the information given is a bit different.

As such, it's backwards compatibility is pretty seamless.
