Traveller High Guard Stateroom size

A recent post in the Traveller forum brings up a good question.

On page 67 of High Guard, the rules states

"Staterooms require 4 tons at a cost of MCr 9.5 per stateroom. Staterooms actually average about 2 tons, but the additional tonnage is used to provide corridors and access ways, as well as galley and recreation areas."

From the beginning of Traveller, a stateroom has always been drawn as displacing 3 tons (2 x 3 on a grid). By the rule stated in High Guard, it should instead be 2 x 2.

The original core rulebook listed staterooms as 2x2, but that was declared an error and errata was released with corrected drawings. All the other books show staterooms as 3 x 3 on the deckplans, which makes them displacing 3 tons instead of the 2 listed.

So which is correct? Is the rule on page 67 an error, or are all the deckplans that have been released incorrect?

Think your second 3 x 3 meant 2 x 3.

But nope not always, on occasion staterooms have gone over this though it's not common. And nothing says it has to be 2 x 3, just 3 tons which is six squares this could be 1 x 6 for example.

Yes, you are correct, a typo on my part.

That's true, however the norm is the regular 2 x 3 rectangle on most deckplans. On the rare occassion you'll see the standard altered some to fit the hull or some other item/object (like on the 800 ton mercenary cruiser).

(bump)

I am still interested in an 'official' ruling here. It's a rather important distinction if you are making ship deckplans.

I posted this very issue on another thread.
I defined the words... (staterooms actually average about 2 tons...) as not a rigid measurement, but the "average" size. In GURPS traveller and T20, the rooms are specifically called out as 2x2 squares.
So... IMTU I call out the "standard" 3 ton space as "High Passenger" stateroom, the 2 tons space and "Middle Passenger" stateroom, and a 1 ton space as "Working Class" stateroom (public freshers must be located somewhere within the common areas for these smallest cabins)
But the 3 space room is the most flexible size thus it is located in most cannon deck plans. You can always rent out a 3 ton room for to a middle passenger, but you can NEVER rent out a 2 ton room to a high passenger.
In all cases, the TOTAL 4 tons per stateroom remains the same, it's just there is more "common" space when using the smaller 2 ton rooms...

Well hopefully we'll get a reply and let us know if the existing standard is incorrect, or the rules in High Guard are incorrect.
