This question needs to be settled.

Ok, after seeing a few people spouting off about this I am going to ask this straight out, and I hope Matt or someone will answer it in a straightforward fashion.

Where is the Sub-Machine Gun (SMG)?

Apparently this has become a sticking point for some people since it apparently does not appear in either the Core Book or Mercenary. Now, I have a sneaking suspicion that it DOES occur...under another name. I also suspect that if it WAS left out it might be that because of the auto-pistol (which seems more like a machine pistol) and the autocarbine, it might have been seen as redundant.

So...where is the SMG? was it left out deliberatley? will it be appearing elsewhere at some point?

BUt there are no Autocarbines in the book... there are Assault Rifles and Autorilfes...

If I'd have to pick I'd take Assault Rilfes due to their shorter range.

The Carbine category only exists for Energy Weapons... strangely enough.

Here you go:

Submachine Gun: A light fully-automatic weapon firing pistol cartridges. Submachine guns usually come with either a rigid stock or a folding one for better accuracy. They use the Gun Combat (Slug Pistol) skill.

Code:
WEAPON TL RANGE DMG AUTO RECOIL MASS MAG COST AMMO-COST
SMG 5 Assault 3d6-3 4 1 3 30 500 20

It is in Mercenary.

Actually, I'm liking the term auto-carbine more and more. The phrase SMG may be getting somewhat derogated as manufacturers come out with things they term PDW or use shortened assault rifles in the roles previously filled by SMGs.

By TL10, the term might be obsolete. Perhaps this could have been made clearer in the text.

I'm assuming the 'default' weapons are generally (at least of those we have RW examples) taken as a kind of 'future' standard, ie: the auto-pistol is statted as a TL9 or 10 version, rather than as the more primitive TL5 version.

Thank you, Bry. I appreciate your response. I have no issue with your decision at all, just wanted to confirm.

So it's an Assault Rifle with Pistol Damage... sounds fair to me.

The stats were for larger, "longer" SMGs fired from the shoulder. For a smaller, "shorter" SMG fired from the hip or brace position use Pistol ranges.

I've put together all the MGT weapons lower than TL15 in one list, with all the armours. I have adjusted them a little to suit my tastes, and included a couple extra, and the armours are adjusted slightly, too, so I've posted it as a .doc so people can alter it to their heart's content. :)

I note that SMGs have all but petered out by TL10 by my estimations, and really made most of their gains by TL9.

So at shorter range it's an expensive way to get a poor Autopistol? ;)

Autopistol has the same range, the same damage, the same Autofire rating... but 0 recoil, and costs less.

No... I'll stick with the first one you posted, where you trade 1 recoil to get longer range out of your Autopistol, that, I thought was ok.

How does a folding stock on an SMG give better accuracy (unless you mean fold out the stock to shoulder fire)...?

Damon.

It probably does mean folding out the stock and firing from the shoulder - that's what the folding stock is for, after all.
