The Ultimate Runequest World !!!!

Mongoose
Hi Guys at Mongoose.

Good to see the elric and Hawkmoon supplements on their way. They look great. A must buy. Takes me back to when i bought stormbringer 1st edition (circa 1980).

So the question is when do you go for the ultimate ? CALL OF CTHULHU !!
I'd love to see it done properly and maybe a PULP CTHULHU supplement.

Get Vincent to write it and the pulp too. Add in a taste of Robert E Howard. Got to be a winner !!

What does everybody think ?

Hello

HAWKMOON was published back in 1986, and the new edition was published only as a Monograph in 2004, so i am happy with Mongoose taking over this gaming world.

STORMBRINGER was published in 1981, and reprinted over the years. ELRIC! was the new attempt for a Stormbringer RPG, and it´s second edition is what we know of as Stormbringer 5th Edition. I have no problem with Chaosium Inc.´s version of Stormbringer. It´s a great game system, and Chaosium Inc. has published a lot of wonderful supplements for it. But there were no publications in the last few years, except the Monographs.
So i can understand that there is a need for Mongoose Elric of Melnibone, and welcome it. *

But i think CALL OF CTHULHU is in good hands were it is right now. Chaosium Inc. might not be a fast publisher, but most of the released supplements in the last few years were very good, and their interpretation of the Cthulhu Mythos is still my favourite one.
Now with the Pendragon and Stormbringer RPG option gone, Chaosium Inc, can concentrate on Call of Cthulhu and Deluxe Basic Role Playing (THEIR continuation of RQ3). *

* By the way: Is Chaosium Inc. still allowed to publish THEIR Stormbringer and/or Hawkmoon and/or supplements?

Cheers

Sorry no offense to Mongoose...you've done a great job with 2nd age glorantha...but

Chaosium Cthulhu is an award winning truly awesome game. Do it properly? You mean the Mona Lisa needs a moustache?

My top three fave rpg supplements in the last 25 years in this order...

1)Chaosium - Masks Of Nyarlothotep

2)Chaosium - Griffin Island

3)Games Workshop - That Middenheim one where you have to get to the Duke

Sorry showing my age.

2)Chaosium - Griffin Island

Sorry showing my age.

Sorry gotta disagree with this one Griffin Mountain Rocked!
Griffin Island (incidentally by Avalon Hill), on the other hand was a pale imitation.

My all time favourite is and I supect always will be Pavis/Big Rubble. Not that I'd want any more stuff for it now really, it's been pretty much explored to the nth degree.

As for a new setting that would suit MRQ to the ground, I've gotta say Tamriel (setting for The Elder Scrolls) much of my life has been eaten by Oblivion lately and I think it is perfect for an RQ tabletop port!

I had both. I reconverted Island to glorantha (using Mountain) and used Island. It was Mountain but polished up. Just that little bit more superior but gloranthaless. As a supplement I rate it that highly even 25 years later.

Do you think Griffin Mountain invented "Free Roaming" gaming (a la Grand Theft Auto)?. Did it come before the computer game Elite (which was Free Roaming)?

Showing my age again....

I think it was Traveller that really invented it back in '78 (I think) which was if not the inspiration behind Elite then there were some damned peculiar coincidence. GI comes a close second though, and I think it was the first successful attempt to do it with a decent level of detail and style. Although the more I think about it, Big Rubble was put together that way as well.

Heh...Chaosium is Call of Cthulhu! I don't think Chaosium would be quite so helpful in selling off that franchise. That's the first game I ever ran so like a lot of people I'm pretty attached to it. Luckily, like it's been mentioned many times before, RQ is very close to BRP...conversions for Cthulhu should be pretty easy. That one supplement, BloodQuest from Postmortem Studios, has already done a lot of the work pretty well. I've been working a bit myself at adapting it to CoC. I think the RQ rules would make things a bit more combat-oriented, which would make my bloodthirsty gamers happy! [/b]

IMO Griffin Mountain was far superior, but Griffin Island wasn't bad, and had better handouts. (I actually ran with the latter for a while, but found the former an invaluable resource when running RQ2.)

Note that Moon Design has reprinted Griffin Mountain. There are now some way cool illos of the citadels.

Sorry i should have said let mongoose do Call of Cthulhu properly (as Chaosium and others did it in the past !)

As a longtime fan of the game, I remember the glory days of Shadows of Yog-Sogoth, the Asylum, Delta Green etc

More recently, the game has been suffering some neglect and needs a boost to bring it up to par, as Mongoose is doing with Elric.

I don't think Chaosium can do this. They had the chance when D20 COC came out to relaunch the game but there was a lack of supplements from them eg Pulp Cthulhu.

By all means let chaosium write stuff for the game but let Mongoose work their magic on it. I mean, C'mon Vincent could do COC Briliantly.

Imagine a cover for COC by chris quilliams with a two-fisted investigator battling a Dark Young !!! Thats the COC I think of !!!

The French publisher Oriflam has produced several Hawkmoon sourcebooks and campaigns. Some of them are awesome but... it is written in French.

I'd enjoy seeing Mongoose and other game companies produce Adventure and Scourcebooks for CoC. Some of my favorite CoC books came from independant publishers.

There are actually a LOT of Hawkmoon supplements published by Oriflam in French - including sourcebooks for Granbretan, the Kamarg, France, Espaniya, Scandia, the East, plus heaps of scenario books too. In general the standard is extremely high and preserves the Hawkmoon atmosphere very well, and they are helped by a complete new edition of the Hawkmoon rules (called Hawkmoon NE) with some cool science rules.

I think a lot of them are still in print and available - I can recommend them to anyone who can scrape their way through French!
