The Best and Worst Battle level ships

The shield ship is a very cool concept, and it would be a shame if ACTA completely disregards them, after all, It was Mongoose who introduced them in the first place in the Drakh sourcebook for the rpg. Wing commander came up with some stats for them, I would play him, but he sold his entire drakh fleet :-(

it does, I consult the spirits of past playtesters, those who have displeased Matt and never been seen again! :P

Crikey, I never figured playtesting would involve necromancy...

or what's that other word beginning with necro-?

Couple of quick comments...

The issue identified with the geg above is also true of interceptors. In smaller games not enough AD can be concentrated to make the amount stopped by interceptors irrelevant. In larger games the required AD can often be rounded up as interceptors stay roughly static in there ability to stop damage from 2 to 10ish.

Lakara comes across as a horrible ship vs its contemporaries due to the short range of its beam and rate at which it can close. It does have some bulk, and a good field of secondaries, but they are so short ranged that they rarely play a part in any battle I've fought in (generally they fire once before the enemy regains range advantage). Now I have tended to fight fast opponents, but there is not really a shortage of them.

Even when the Interceptor theshold is exceeded, you still stop 1/6 of all interceptable fire -- a linear rate after a threshold is exceeded.

The GEG, however does not even possess a linear component; it's just a constant, per weapon system.

So, the GEG suffers a little worse from the threshold than the Interceptor does -- but it benefits from it at the lower PLs, too. 6 of this, half dozen of the other makes decent GEGs (GEG effective 2 for LR becuase of dodge) hard to balance at low PLs (balance done by a very very small gun), and hard to balance at high PLs (for the Cruiser --- it gets a huge R arc gun to try to compensate for a horrid defense system. Would rahter have just gotten more hits, see the Armored Cruiser Battle-level-idea-not-balanced-thing.)

Indeed, Heavy and Light Raiders are a case in point. At Patrol and Skirmish PL they are good ships, Raid they are OK and above this they become pretty easy to kill. You have to balance them assuming they will be more chosen in about a Skirmish PL game but unlike a ship using Interceptors (blocking at least 1/6 of all incoming firepower), the GEG will block an increasingly smaller proportion of incoming fire.
