Tactical Combat w/miniatures

Rougespear

Mongoose
Hello everyone new to the boards and just getting back into Traveller!

With that being said I am more of a wargamer than a RPGer. Was wondering if it would be a good idea for a new supplment on a optional combat system for miniatures. You know a little more tactical. I have a boat load of 15mm sci fi minis and would love to run a game with some mass ground combat and maybe a climatic space battle. Right now I only have the core rule book and not sure if any of the other books contain any thing like this.

I would think you could get enough material on ground and space combat to warrant another supplement. Would the Traveller faithful think this was a good idea?

Welcome back to the game Rougespear. If I recall there was mention of MGT doing miniatures rules (and figs) as part of a fresh take on Striker. Unless I misread or am misremembering, both definite possibilities. I do think such an idea would have player support though :)

I know I'd love to see some well sculpted (but inexpensive lol) Striker type minis (15mm), troops, support gear, and vehicles, as well as good rules to run Traveller Merc Mini combat. Of course then I'd have to give up some other vices to have the funds and time to buy and paint them (unless they were prepainted), with little chance of actually playing :(

Beyond the core rulebook:

Book 1: Mercenary contains rules for ground combat.

There is a free playtest version of miniature rules for Judge Dredd, not sure how relevant it would be to regular Traveller, but Judge Dredd itself uses the Traveller rules.

For mass battles, I'd recommend the Fast And Dirty (FAD) sci-fi/modern miniature wargame rules; they have the same 'feel' as Traveller and even though the rules are different, it's very easy to convert forces and weapons from Traveller to FAD.

The full FAD rules are free for download in PDF format from the above site. If you want, you can order a print version from HERE.

You can also find the FAD forums HERE.

Thanks for the info!

Would like to see a set were I could convert my PCs into heros. I am waiting for the highguard and merc books to come in. So hope that will get me what I am looking for.

Love fad! its a very good system, but never thought about using it for Traveller. I will give it a good look.

FAD is a great game for larger combats and a good fit for Traveller IMHO. StarGrunt is similar in many ways, and another good game.

I'm a fan of Two Hour Wargames' "5150" and the free "Chain Reaction 3.0" game (which is essentially the core of 5150 using a stylized TL7 or TL8 weapons set). 5150 was written by Traveller fans, and even though it isn't Traveller, there is a clear influence in the kinds of equipment available.

I may need to look at Judge Dredd. I've been working on a Traveller conversion for Battlefield Evolution, but it makes sense to use a game that already connects with a Traveller setting.

How many people really use miniatures for Traveller? If so what scale. I like 15mm!
Since combat scenes are rare in my campaigns, and there is not that
much use for miniatures in other situations, I very rarely use minia-
tures with Traveller - in fact, I tend to use counters instead, as they
are easier to transport.

I actually like 25mm better (true 25mm, not D&D scale), but understand for Traveller the advantages of a smaller 15mm. It's just that I can more easily paint 25mm and have tons at that scale from decades of role-playing. There also seems to be more options out there for 25mm.

I have a large dining room table, so the scale of 15mm isn't a huge advantage over 25mm. :D

I use 25mm for squad-level and smaller actions, 15mm for larger actions and those that use vehicle movement. But then I also have gathered quite a collection of Traveller minis in both scales over the decades. If I was just starting out in the minis arena, I'd go 15mm only due to cost, ease of painting, and wide selection available today of generic sci fi figures and accessories.

I only use figures for handling combat scenes. I got a bag of toy soldiers from the pound shop and got a friend to paint their helmets different colours.

IMHO Mongoose should do a wargame in the Traveller universe.

If Mongoose Traveller had been a short-lived endeavour one could understand this not happening - but now that the line has been running for several years and that there have been dozens of books published, there is little excuse.

Bring on a Striker III wargame - and please do not forget to include conversion rules for the RPG!

I agree GK.
I know Mongoose has the rights for 10 years so I know there is at least 5 more years to go. I believe they could do a book on it. If they have a whole book devoted to powerarmor then one for miniatures would not be out of the question.

But there would have to be a conversion for the RPG. I think that would be a must.

I'm slowly but surely expanding my collection of 15mm miniatures which are very useful for Traveller combat. Of course, collecting and painting them is already half of the fun and a hobby all by itself :)

There are many excellent 15mm manufacturers today who take orders online and produce amazingly good miniatures; among my favorite are Ground Zero Games, Peter Pig, Khurasan Miniatures, Rebel Minis and 15mm.co.uk.

I like the 15mm scale as my storage space is very limited, and I only have a 100cm by 60cm table (larger games will have to be played out on the floor ); this scale is also relatively cheap and easy to paint, and the sculpting quality is quite good.

Yeah, 15mm has come along way for Sci FI. With the amount of companies doing 15mm it is one of the reasons I am getting back into traveller. I am not a big RPG player any more but I have always had a place in my heart for Traveller. Hope to do a Gundam type adventure using the 1/144 scale gundam models with my 15mm.

GZGs range of vehicals are great!!! Plus the number of Sci Fi buildings means I can do a good size town or star port on a 2x2 or 3x3 foot board.

I want to use Traveller as a campaign system for my skirmish games. I dont use alot of roleplay in my games. I call it Traveller Tactics :D

WHere can I get 15mm Deck plans from? I know they used to release them back in the day.

I'd love to see a Striker III book released, but only if they used the original Striker as a base, not a fan of Striker II.

I feel Mongoose will tend to agree with you (but alas not with me). :D

Hmm, dunno. I 'slightly' prefer Striker I to II, but not a fan of having a 15mm fireteam to a base, still like the 1-1 scale of BF:Evo. If Mongoose did a Striker III, with a single figure per base, the command and control elements of Striker I, but the ease of play of BF:Evo, I think it'd be a winner.
