SST EVO

Mongoose
I have been keeping track of the possibility of getting some pre-painted SST stuff, and thought I would chime in...If the market is a concern, take my situation as a for example:

I want to buy over a hundred models worth just from the Arachnids list, ideally warriors, hoppers, a tanker (or 2) and a brain...

And thats just for me...if everyone else is like minded, it seems that Mongoose could certainly make some money! Just my opinion.

I'm not shy to paint my own figs, but if the paintjobs are decent, I'll be buying those.

time is a commodity that I don't have a lot of, so this will cut of my sleepdeprivation for the time being.

I'm awaiting those prepaints.

But I'm also not shy to mix figs from other companies when playing a game (right now we're using orks and necrons as new enemies for my MI).

Probably will be buying some Karmans also.

But to me, I still like the sculpts for the MI a lot a lot a lot.

see, theres 2 of us at least...not knocking the modellers/painters at all, you guys are truly gifted, but as previously posted, time is at a premium for me, but I still love gaming w/ painted minis, so pre-painted is the route for me. And the better the sculpts/paintjobs the better! Mongoose take your time and do them right, but don't abandon the pre paint SST stuff!

Depending on price point my intent was to buy a platoon each of LAMI and Exosuits. I've got plenty of PAMI and Marauders. I think I'm also peaking on my Arachnid army soon. When I collect Skinnies I think I'm going to get the older unpainted models so I can paint them myself, unless the new ones look different and better. Whether we play SST:Evo or stick to 1st edition remains to be seen.

If the price isn't higher then the meat ones, and the paint job is decent, I'd grab an exosuit platoon. they are the only Mobile infantry platoon(and figures) i don't have.

I'd also considering thickening my cannon fod- I mean arachnids warriors.

I have yet to paint any Skinnies. Mind you I have purchased all of them. Just never got around to painting them. If the paint jobs are good, I would consider selling my unassembled and unpainted Skinnies and replacing them with the new releases as they are released.

My only concern with prepaints is that they all look the same and all armies will look the same.
I quite like having my warriors in brown rather than black, likewise with the hoppers that are in a hornet colour scheme
Makes armies a little more individual.
The advantage is a saving in time, which I’m up for, but I do wonder what the price will be?

I (and our whole tabletop community) prefer unpainted and anussembled miniatures for individual posings and color shemes.
I am not against prepainted though as long as the older models are still available.

Given that bugs don't have fine details, I think perpaints will work for them. For figs with faces, guns, pouches and other details I worry that prepaints will fall far short of the mark.

I agree, having looked at some BF-EVO figures this weekend, I wasn't too impressed by the cross eyed gunmen

I'm a bit concerned that it will result in lots of very identical armies.

are Mongoose going to keep producing the plastics and non painted figures

Well, with a lot of identical armies we could band togrther to recreate the Klendathu Campaign.

And I think that customising will be easier with prepaints (at least you could give more attention and time to customising using details on the troopers).

My Dust Devils are mostly brown, but I'd like to get my hands on some green PAMI

I am in the pre-painted camp. I skipped the first release solely because I don't have the time to paint the number of units I'd want to own. I plan to buy most of the new set releases when it finally hits.

I had some misgivings about the 'every fig the same' syndrom and the 'not amazing' paints (although the evo ones are some fairly good IMO)
Since playing a few times on a decent terrain table with the out-of-the-box Bevo units, I can tell you that feeling quickly goes away on the battlefield. I think my biggest complaint is the unit card designs. They are so bland. I wish mongoose had the art-direction that companies like Rackham and GW employ. Maybe some day if we keep buying...! (The cards could also use better layout and icons.)

...and finally. if you don't like the paint job, you can re-paint or touch up the figs. So everyone wins except people that want heavy metal minis...and in SST that's not an issue anyway.

Not everyone wins because if they stop producing the old models then you Must buy the pre-paints which will have a significant cost increase.

As long as they offer the old models at the old prices everyone wins... which I find to be a dubious possibillity. They will eventually make them more expensive as a specialty item.

Personally I may buy a few pre-paints depending on the sculpt. The supposed redesigned tanker could be very cool, as well as Blister/Blaster bugs.

I like the idea of adding detail to the bugs. Painting marks or patterns on the warriors would be one way to customise the army. I also heard a rumor that the warrior legs would be semi-posable ( I could be wrong about this).

Price is a factor for me too.

Having invested a considerable amount of time and money in SST, I am mainly looking at the newer (I.E. Previously unreleased product).

I aim to 'touch them up' (ooh er) to make them 'fit' with my existing forces, and possibly re-do the bases.

The Warrior bugs are attractive though, for a way of bulking my Bugs without the hassle Lol!

I don't see why they'd make them a specialty item, unless they actually become a specialty item. That is to say, if their market share goes down to 10-20%, then they actually are a specialty item, and should be priced accordingly (once you've cleared out old inventory, anyway). If sales of unpainted and painted pieces are at rough parity, then they have little incentive to raise prices for unpainted pieces: very few people who want unpainted figures will buy prepaints, so raising the prices just lowers demand rather than transferring it.

Except that one will be in stores, and heavily pushed by Mongoose to sell, while the other will more or less be left as it is... sales will inevitably whittle and the price will go up as you say when existing stock drys up.

It might take a while, but thats what will happen. People who don't want pre-paints will still buy pre-paints, and re-paint them and such, because its available at a store near you.

Its going to be unfeasable to do both in the long run, if Evo is a success then the original line will sadly disappear I would imagine . . . . . . . .

Why would it be sad for the metal minis to disappear? Do you not have enough of the metal minis you want by now? They have been out for quite some time. There is all kinds of discounted box sets all over the net. So go get them before they are no longer available.

Plastic minis is the way of the future. The price on metals is skyrocketing. Shoot even Rackham's confrontation and Reaper's new line are plastic.

But if for some reason you can't get all you want by the time the plastic ones come out I'm pretty sure you can play with a metal / plastic mixed force.
