Spears

Banded Mongoose
Been thinking of bringing spears into our games, and would be grateful for any feedback.

Spear

When a Thrown spear scores a Critical Miss, it will remain embedded in its Retrieval point and can only be removed by expending two Ready Actions.

CC+: +1 Dam: 1D+2 Special Qualities: AP 1, Two-handed, Thrown Rep Req: 1 Cost: 100 Rep+: -

At the moment they require the inclusion of a new Special Quality:

Special Quality – Thrown

This weapon may not only be used in Close Combat, but may also be thrown as a missile. If used as such it has 1 shooting die, a range of 8" and Damage remains the same.

After being thrown, a Thrown weapon may not be re-used until it is Retrieved. After determining where it lands, use a token to mark its Retrieval point.

A Thrown weapon which hits is considered to be in base contact with the target, for purposes of retrieval. A Thrown weapon which misses will be found within 1d3" of the target, direction determined using the Explosion Marker.

A figure within 1” of the weapon's Retieval point can retrieve it for their own use by expending a ready action.

Perhaps it would make more sense to make the thrown range part of the weapon stats, rather than innate to the Thrown Quality?

There might be good cause for a new Trait, also:

Strongarm

This ganger has a hefty throw on him. The distance that grenades (and weapons with the the Thrown quality) may be thrown is increased by 2” (1” vertically).

This sounds pretty good, and well thought out. If you determine a 'missed' throws retrieval point to be another ganger, would you allow it to hit them instead :-)

Yeah - good idea.. with an additional roll (eg. 5-6 on a d6) to see if it hits them, or just if it makes base contact? I prefer the latter, I think.

I'm thinking I might write this up fully and submit it to S&P.

I'm trying to think of other weapons that might require the Thrown quality.. but can't think of much beyond rocks, boomerangs* or shuriken* that would need to be defined as something other than spear.

Can anyone think of any others?

Ned

*and these would probably require a skill beyond that of your standard punk...

I'm interested in seeing more rules.
If you think you're a good rules writer (from these, I reckon so) I would like to see more rules for actual gang members. I find that there are plenty of mercenaries, but not enough gang options.
I woul dreally like to see Boingers as a merc though, and give punk gangs the option of having sky-boards (I forgot the name it's been so long!).

Or rules to have characters in the game, then rules for these characters...

I dunno.

Well, I was actually wondering if people could think of other thrown weapons rather than more rules..

But, I agree, it would be nice to see more rules - the Cursed Earth extras provided some different flavoured gangs, and the vehicle rules were promised as an accompaniment, so we can but cross our fingers..

I did submit rules for Wally Squad judges, but they've not yet seen print.

I'll have a think on boingers. Hmm.

Other 'thrown' weapons:

Atlatl & Woomera (aids dart/spear throwing)
Axe
Bolas
Boomerang
Catapult (hand-held, not the siege engine)
Chakram (throwing ring)
Dart
Hunga Munga
Knife
Knobkerries & Rungu (weighted club)
Kusarigama (the weighted chain part of it)
Kyoketsu shoge
Manriki (throwing chain)
Manriki-gusari (double-weighted throwing chain)
Sling (aids stone throwing)
Swiss Arrow

Hope that list helps! ;)

I take it you are not looking at all manner of thrown items that cause damage like

Rocks various
bricks
really anything that can be picked up and thrown

Other improvised thrown weapons can include:

Dustbin lids
Baking trays/cake tins (frisbees)
Empty/jammed weapons
Molotov cocktails
Bottles
Paving slabs (if you're strong enough!)
