Confederation Navy: Engineering and Standard Jump Drive modules

The Confederation Navy has five sizes for their jump drives, which due to their ubiquity tend to be adopted by most member navies and some commercial entities.

The fifth is more of a category of odd volumes that's derisively, perhaps affectionally, nicknamed thumb drives, as they tend to be less than thirty five tonnes.

notes: you could make or accommodate specific performance perimeters for each starwarship class, there seemed to be surprisingly limited numbers of (large) troop carriers and fighter carriers, so adaptation of existing or a general type of drive as primary motivational force, possibly with smaller sub drives for a better manoeuvring control to make up the difference

Confederation Navy: Flotillas, Squadrons and Task Forces

1. The Confederation Navy's combat forces are organized into six (sector) named Fleets, and a rather large Strategic Reserve.

2. The Solomani Rim Fleet is easily the most powerful of the six, besides very concentrated along the cusp of it's assigned area of operations, being easily reinforced by the Strategic Reserve and the Aldebaran Fleet, really short lines of communications, as well as making the rotation of starwarships and personnel rather simple.

3. Task Forces are the equivalent of (battle) fleets, assigned squadrons and assets as perceived necessary, from the Confederation Navy, member government navies, allies, and private military contractors.

4. These are divided into Task Groups, about equally divided between combat focussed units, and logistical support.

5. Squadrons are permanent field and administrative formations, usually based around a (or more) primary homogenous type of starwarship, with escorts and support units.

6. Flotilla is a collection of minor combatants, that can be led by an intermediate combatant.

7. Flotillas that are organized for frontline combat tend to be composed of homogenous minor combatants.

8. For convoys or rear area operations, Flotillas can be composed of any spacecraft from any allied navy, to impose order and establish a chain of command.

9. Flotillas are tend to be ad hoc formations, as most minor combatants are usually attached as escorts to larger formations, or are part of Patrol Squadrons.

Confederation Navy: Flotillas, Squadrons and Task Forces

A. Fleet Admirals are assigned a sector, with it's fleet, to administer and command.

B. Sectors are divided into four quadrants, each with four subsectors, more or less.

C. These are administered by Vice Admirals, who usually are assigned a Fleet Squadron to deal with issues that Patrol Squadrons can't.

D. Rear Admirals administer subsectors.

E. This tends to be confined to subsector assigned Patrol, Communications, and Logistics Squadrons, as well as similar units transitting through.

F. Contra Admirals administer major naval bases, though facilities might be spread system wide.

Confederation Navy: Flotillas, Squadrons and Task Forces

G. The Confederation Navy consists of all starwarships, assets and facilities of the aforesaid.

H. The Grand Fleet consists of all available starwarships within a a specific space time window, assembled to achieve a specific strategic, usually existential, objective, authorized by the General Secretary, and directly supervised by the Grand Admiral.

I. A Combined Fleet consists of a large number of selected starwarships from a (sector) Fleet, gathered to achieve a vital operational objective, usually at the beginning of a conflict, as the assumption is that attrition would tend to discount reenacting that later on.

J. A Task Force is usually centered on one to five Fleet and Carrier Squadrons, with all supporting elements.

K. A Strike Force would usually consist of any number of Strike Squadrons, plus support.

Confederation Navy: Flotillas, Squadrons and Task Forces

L. Fleet Admirals are both the field commander of their (sector) fleet, and the administrator of Confederation Navy assets within their assigned sector.

M. Regional administration and field commands become separate, as Vice Admirals are either quadrant administrators, or Task Force commanders.

N. Rear Admirals are either subsector administrators, or Fleet Squadron, Carrier Squadron, Strike Force, and/or Task Group commanders.

O. Contra Admirals are either a major Confederation Navy base administrators, or Fleet Division, Carrier Division, and/or Strike Group commanders.

P. Commodore is a brevet rank, temporarily given to non flag officers, to ensure seniority in the chain of command, since the most senior Captain may not be suitable for the mission or assignment, and as the authority of a Commodore is considered equal to that of a Contra Admiral, and Confederation Navy officers are recognized to be one rank above that of member government navy officers.

Confederation Navy: Organization

Fleet Squadron - ideally, six modern fast dreadnoughts/battlestars in three Fleet Divisions, twelve modern five kilotonne super destroyers, four basestars (tanker/tender/carrier), six fleet couriers; minimum two battlecruisers, six kilotonne patrol ships, one basestar, four fleet couriers.

Carrier Squadron - spacecraft and/or ground forces, whether fighter, assault, light, troop or escort carrier, as well as battle tender; referred to as Carrion.

Strike Squadron - mix and match, usually, one to six Strike Divisions with upto three starwarships each; sometimes could be destroyer flotillas, or even commerce raider wolf packs.

Patrol Squadron - let's say subsector assigned patrol ships, with an occasional destroyer; PatRons.

Communications Squadron - responsibility for fleet couriers and other communications spacecraft and facilities within a subsector; CommRons, Commons.

Logistics Squadron - responsibility for subsector logistics; was tempted to dump it under Carrier; LogOn; logarithm being the flow of logistics, logjam being the lack thereof.

Strike Squadron formally organized as a destroyer flotilla; commanded by a contra admiral.

Command division: Light cruiser or super destroyer as flagship; reconnaissance assets; non assigned destroyers; support vessels.

Strike division: one to five divisions, two to three destroyers each.

Minor combatants grouped together as a flotilla; led by a commodore.

Command division; anything large and fast enough to act as a command ship, usually with enough firepower to deal with intermediate combatants; support vessels, if any.

(Flotilla) division: two or more more or less homogenous starwarships, or a starwarship with supporting vessels; as many divisions as can be organized and controlled from the command ship.
