Size o fRunes

Has anyone given thought to the size of Runes. For example if you have to keep them on you and touch them , are they small enought to put on a ring or sword hilt? Can you put several on a bracelet or necklace? Or are players going to be carrying a bag of rocks around with them.

I figure they're as big as you want them to be.

For my games, they'll fit on rings, sword hilts, necklace, etc. I figure that they'd be as big as a US quarter.

 Evil GM thought....

GM: "The Broo finally flee, their shaman collapsed beside the massive sarsen stone on which he had placed his hand during the combat."
Player: "Have a look at the boulder. How big is it?"
GM: "It's about 3m tall, and 2m by 1m."
Player: "He had his hand on it and was casting Befuddle and Disorder constanly, so it must be something. We'll have a good look."
GM: "On the face of the sarsen is a faintly glowing shape, two semi-circles opposed to each other."
Player: "A Disorder Rune!"
GM: "Yes. You appear to have found the Rune the shaman had been using."
Player (Glum): "How am I going to keep that around my neck...."

Don't knock it! In an old RQ campaign, we found a Detect Mountain matrix inscribed on an ENC 40 boulder with a 10 metre range, so we put it in a handcart and, at a later point, managed to fly around a mountain that was poisonous to the touch in a zero-visibilty fog just by using said Detect Mountain matrix.

Ping, is the mountain within 10 metres? No, move ahead a bit, ping, whoah slow down, ping, what's the matter with the GM? He looks pissed off and we don't know why.

I always liked the way you could have foci tatooed on you in RQ3, I thought it fitted in well with many cultures.

I was a little disappointed by the change in MRQ.

BUT, if runes are potentially very small, they could actually be inserted under the skin, as tiny pieces of stone are in some cultures (Indonesia I believe?) today.

The way I'm doing it is that once the rune is incorporated the original form of the rune is now inert, although it must be held to cast a spell or use its granted ability.

The runic inscription can then be copied onto a different object to act as the focus, a wand or bracelet as in the RQ2 rules, a staff, or tatoos.

Upon your death the runic power flows back into the nearest available runic inscription or sympathetic object.
