Singularity - musings

I like the physical design of the Imperial Navy book with the shiny cover so if it is like that this is a win.

So, Imperial Marines:
  • Gold Cover with (Dark) Maroon (NOT MAGENTA) Sunburst (like the Imperial Marine banner), or the reverse?
IISS:
  • Silvery Cover with Red Sunburst
Imperial Army:
  • Shiny Dark Olive-Green Cover with Black Sunburst?
  • Shiny Dark-Red Cover with Black Sunburst?
  • Darker Khaki/Drab-Brown Cover with Black Sunburst?

Apologies if this has already been noted elsewhere, or I have missed something contextually in the campaign.

Am I the only one who has noticed that on page 9 of the Knightly Orders book that the paragraph text says there are only FIVE Domains in the Imperium and the Knightly Orders table beneath it fails to list the Order of Ilelish?

There are in fact SEVEN Domains in 1105 (including both Ilelish & Deneb since the 580s), but there simply has not been an Archduke ever appointed to oversee the Domain of Deneb, and hence there is no extant Knightly Order of Deneb in 1105.

The Archducal dignity of the Domain of Ilelish was reestablished in 1096, the childless Archduke Ferdinand replaced upon his death by the elevation of Duke Dulinor of Dlan to the position in 1104.

Is there an errata thread for this somewhere?

Ooooh! That's a baddie. Asking Cassie to apply a fix right away. Thanks for the note.

I'm sure we'll discuss it when the time comes, but for Marines I will insist on maroon cover with gold foil text and sunburst.

I've always associated the IISS with orange, but that's just my head canon. I'm sure we'll discuss it, and Bella, our author, will certainly have an opinion. Could be black cover, I suppose to emphasise the depths of space. We shall see.

I like your first suggestion for Army.

We're getting a little off track for a Singularity discussion, so I'll leave it at that. :)

If Naalir achieves its plan does charted space become the Culture?
I drew a lot of inspiration from the Culture novels for this campaign, and I think there would certainly be some similarities. Not exactly what I would envision, but I wrote a little piece on what might come next as a conclusion to the Singularity Companion, which should fall into your hands soon. I believe Cassie will assemble it after she's done hammering out all the stretch goal documents, which she is working through quickly.

Really, each Referee and group of Travellers will mold it into something entirely different if they take it beyond the campaign's conclusion. If PoD campaigns are any indication, Traveller players are very creative and take things in myriad directions.

How do the other polities react to the new paradigm? A TL18 society with machine and meat living in harmony...
They might have to look into obtaining CIs for their own purposes, which Naalir, I believe, would be quite willing to provide...

Agreed. But the IISS Sunburst should be Red in any event. That's their sunburst-emblem color.

(And Marine MAROON, not MAGENTA please. ;) )

Trust me. I share your enthusiasm.

Whether our print vendor matches the colour correctly is another story, but we'll give them RGB 128, 0, 0, and hope for the best.
I look forward to your take on the Imperial (Star) Marines.

You'll have lots of research to do through the various Traveller editions.

Your snip from Dave Nilsen's article in Traveller's Digest 14 reminded me of just one of the issues. What colour(s) for the dress uniform?
Dave has the Marines with a maroon tunic and white trousers (as you do in MGT Third Imperium).
Doug Berry in GT Ground Forces has them in dress blacks with maroon trim, or in dress maroon with a maroon tunic and a black kilt (!) Doug was taken with Scottish culture obviously, as he had his Marines in kilts and playing the bagpipes (I kid you not).

Along the way you'll have slightly more important issues to address, like what is the relationship between the Imperial Navy and the Marines (is it one of genuinely separate services, or is it one where the IN has a superior role and the Marines are an adjunct of the IN)?
How are they funded?
What is their chain of command? (some sources have them directly answering to the Emperor and outside the other chains of authority in the Imperium)
Do the Marines crew their own starships (as MJD would have it in his latest MGT work) or do they go aboard Navy crewed ships (as most of previous canon would have it)?
Do the Marines have non-starship spacecraft Wings/Squadrons (for transport or close support) as some sources would have it?
Is it in fact a "Marine Corps" as MJD terms it in his MGT IN and FFW work? It wasn't called a Marine "Corps" in earlier canon.
Is the basic marine unit a regiment, or is it a brigade?
What is the relationship between the Imperial Marines and the "Naval Regiment"? (introduced to Traveller canon by MJD in Imperial Navy). Why does the latter exist?
Etc

And the most basic question, are the Star Marines of a vast star-spanning empire in the 57th Century just cut-and-paste derivatives of the 20th Century USMC?
