Savaged version of Conan

Mongoose
I would like to see a Savage Worlds version of Conan! I'm sorry, but I just can't get past the ponderous nature of combat in the d20/OGL game systems. To me, Conan should play like the Savage Worlds slogan...Fast! Furious! Fun!

I'm certain people will disagree, but there it is.

I don't think it's the right forum then, because Pinnacle have the rights for their game system.
But as a joint venture, why not

Pinnacle does allow people to license their game engine. I'm not sure what the agreement entails, but I'm told they offer very reasonable terms.

Pinnacle has a licensing agreementnot unlike the one Mongoose has for Traveller and BE. If you plan on selling your product you'd have to get permission from Pinnacle, but there is no cost for the license. (This was a major change from last year.) They do ask that the product by high-quality, with good art and professional layout... that would hardly be a problem for Mongoose. :)

(Also, don't forget that Pinnacle publishes the Solomon Kane RPG using SW, so it shouldn't be too hard to convince them.)

And YES, I would love to see Mongoose (or anyone) publish a SW version of Conan! Along with Traveller, they are the best damn RPGs on the market!

I've just recently gotten into Savage Worlds in the last year, and it coincidentally has inspired me to read more Conan stuff. Since then, I've been working on a Conan-like S&S campaign set in Greyhawk, but I've been really wanting a Savage Worlds Conan game.

I know there are MANY members of the Pinnacle forums who would love to get their hands on an official SW Conan game. Mongoose should seriously consider this option. Heck, Pinnacle has REH's Solomon Kane RPG license, and from what I hear, it's a perfect match; it only seems natural for Mongoose and Pinnacle to work together on a Savage World of Conan. (Savage Sword of Conan? Savage World of Hyboria?)

I remember reading that the Conan license allows Mongoose to publish only one role-playing game based on the IP in question. This is apparently the reason why Mongoose hasn't ported Conan to RQ.

Could someone else acquire a license to publish Conan under a different RPG?

I honestly don't know, I am just repeating some rumor I heard. I mean why not port one of the biggest fantasy brands to your house system if it is not prohibited by the license agreement?

No, I agree, I'd buy this if it was Savage Worlds, it makes alot more sense than d20,

Savage Worlds is a briliant set of rules for Hyboria. Its the only system I like better than BRP.
I have even converted my old RQ Gloranthan Third Age settings to SW, and its great. That's saying alot, as I always felt Glorantha and the BRP system should always had remained hand in hand prior to finding SW.

I love what Mongoose have done with the Conan setting, but BRP would have been better than D20 in my opinion. However, if Mongoose was able to do a SW version...well this would be the icing on the cake for me.

Bring it on!

It's rather well done...

Yes, I have come across this a year or so ago now - it is actually more complete than the copy I saved in my files.

Its very well done, anf has quite a bit of flavour for fan material. I especially enjoyed the arcane items

Pity that the author didn't write up magic spells (variants from the core rules with atmospheric trappings) or perhaps Divine Edges for priests where appropriate.

But quite well done, thanks for posting!

Just got my copy of Savage world: explorer edition.

Look pretty cool, i'm probably gonna try to run a test with adaptation for Conan found on the internet.

Thing I would like to add, would like advices

New derived stat: Dodge = 2 + half Agility.
Initiative: I dunno, I hate this playing cards and joker things. Should just an agility roll can work?

I probably shouldn't go into it to much in this forum, considering Mongoose isn't doing a SW game

But to answer your question - there's no need to do a Dodge trait in SW, its covered by the Parry trait. Parry would have been better titled 'Defence', covering both Dodge and Parry. But there's no need to tinker with the core dynamic, it's covered.

However you could make Dodge an Edge perhaps, if it isn't already listed (there may be a similar Edge that covers it, however). You may find that its already covered under a combat manuver as well, I'm a little rusty, but its possible its there. Many D20 Feats are covered in SW by combat manuevers that anyone can attempt, so don't overlook manuevers. One thing is not to mess with the SW core system, but to tinker around with Edges instead if you find something's not covered

As far as getting rid of the card based Initiative system, thats fair enough. The card initiative system is flavoursome for the western setting, but feels clumsy to me for other genres. We rolled D20 + Agility dice to determine Initiative order, highest first. It did the trick for us. Wild Edges using the 'royal' cards were covered by rolling 20 on the D20 - not all that accurate crossover for the system, but again it works for my troupe.

Perhaps you should go to the Pinnacle forums on the Pinnacle Homepage - heaps of great advice for SW, very similar set-up to these Mongoose forums.
For Hyboria I have used SW for the core rules, and bought the Mongoose Conan products for resource material as they have done the background very well. It turned out to be a great mix, and I hope you find this as well.

Best of luck with it all!!

An update on my above reply:

Dodge is actually covered in SW as an Edge. The Dodge Edge makes you harder to be hit by ranged combat. For melee combat there is a Block Edge which is a bonus to your Parry; this may be what you're looking for...

This may help too - its a sword and sorcery sourcebook for SW - way cool!:
