Hey starting romulan player here, looking to get some feedback on what everyone views are on their fleet picks. I've played 3 games and I do not really like the eagle series. They're small hull points make it too easy to cripple and armored really doesn't help much. Skyeagle I think is a great frigate though, Sparrowhawk is our best ship for the points mid range and the Klingon dread the best ship in the game. Condor is just way to slow.

I am a big fan of the iconic Romulan ships. Generally I will go with a DN backed by a couple KE's with BH's and a a couple small ships to protect the flanks. The KE has awesome shields especially when given 3 extra dice worth when doing the APS SA, but like you mentioned bleed throughs can be a problem.
Generally I can maneuver into position for my first devastating Plasma barrage without taking much damage, the trick is then to survive long enough to reload and repeat, which generally decides the game if I manage a second plasma barrage.
My approaches are generally uncloaked, unless facing a drone heavy adversary.

My 1000 point lineup: 51AD of short range plasma, 36AD of medium range plasma.
1 Condor
2 King Eagles
2 Battle Hawks
1 KF5R

Against highly maneuverable or frigate heavy init sink enemies.
59AD short range plasma, 42AD medium range Plasma
1 KC9R
3 King Eagles
1 Snipe

Against opponents with large ships formations I can practically guarantee the Condor/ KE barrage will annhilate one capital ship and severely degrade a second in the first barrage. The BH's and K5 keep the flanks secure or pick of light cruisers and below.

For the second lineup, the strategy behind using less ships and 3 KE's is that if the enemy is going with massed frigates he is going to have init sink no matter what I pick, but the DN and KE's can pretty much vaporize a frigate in one shot lessening the odds, while the Snipe and KC9R provide protection against flanking. So depending on IDF usage the enemy is going to lose 3-4 frigates in the first major plasma barrage.

Well haven't played with romulans much(we started one game but haven't yet played it through) but so far what I like is basically any ship with plasma-R for the long range potential. King eagle is particulary nice looking with 30 shields(nice 3d6 boost shield when needed), armoured and plasma-R in fairly reasonable price. Royal hawk is also nice as it has decent phaser suite getting 4/6 ph-1's generally. Pity about 28 shields though but 40 damage is nice.

Any klingon vessels is pretty darned nice even after KCR9's phaser nerf.

Fasthawk is also nice. I have general preference for fast ships and ability to toss 9 ph-1's at front arc is nice :D

Finally battle hawk looks nice. Cheap with 6AD worth of plasma ain't that bad. Albeit damage value is low but shields are good and armoured is decent enough. Worth about 2 extra hull boxes which might not sound much but can prove surprisingly useful. And of course ensures even precise weapons could run into foul luck and make it survive when it should die :P Never underestimate usefullness of making opponents chances of going down from 100%!

I'm a fan of 'real' romulan ships as well.

The KE is the best plasma per point ship in the rom fleet. It has good shields as well, but yes it goes pop fast at times.

KEs for the main battle line and Snipes to bulk out with.

Just need the Vulture to make an appearance so I can have an old style dreadnaught as well (2 R's and 2 F's).

KC9R - playing 1000 points or over? Don't leave home without it. 19AD of plasma at range 8, 14 at 12 and 6 at range 16, 12 centre line phaser-1s and effectively 60 forward shields. Turn 6 means it is as maneuverable as a Federation cruiser and it has 10 damage points more than the Condor.

Novahawk and Royalhawk. For an extra 15 points you get 8 damage more than the Firehawk, 2 extra drone swatting tractor beams and command +1.

Fasthawk - Expensive for a fast cruiser but still turn 4, 8 dice of plasma and 8 phaser-1s on the centreline. Two in 8" of the target can put out a possible 32 damage on a turn where they don't fire plasma torpedoes.

Sparrowhawk vs KR - Sparrowhawk has better damage, better phasers, better shields outside the forward arc, the same plasma dice below 8 but 3 less at 8-12. It is only five points more. The KR has better shields in the forward arc and can put out more plasma at long ranges.

For small ships

Battlehawk, 6 dice of plasma, 4 phaser-1s, able to fire plasmas out to 12", which most ships that size cannot.

Skyhawk - Good for a wolfpack ship as agile and has very good phaser arcs. Expensive for a frigate, but all Romulan ships are paying more for cloak.

The Romulans have some very tough ships with a lot of phasers. With a KC9R flagship, a core of the Novahawk/Royal Hawk Command Cruisers (which are basically battlecruisers and are priced as such), sparrowhawks for cruisers and battlehawks for flankers and Skyhawks or KF5Rs for a wolfpack, they've got a good fleet mix.

It will be very interesting to see what they get in the next supplement. The Skyhawk Leader is a Skyhawk that gains a plasma G, so depending on how it is pointed, might make a very interesting addition to the fleet.

The KFR Battle Frigate is the Romulan version of the F6 Frignaught, which basically puts another engine and a plasma G on the KF5R. Depending on how it's converted and the points it could be a very nice addition to the force.

The Sparrowhawk J replaces the wing phaser-1s on the sparrowhawk with plasma-S torps, giving it 16 plasma dice at range 8 and 9 at range 12. I imagine it won't be able to fire them all at once like the New Jersey Battlecruiser, but it'll be interesting.

The K4R and Seahawk frigate would add some much needed cheap ships to the Romulan fleet list.

No guarantee any of them are going in, but there's plenty of SFB stuff it would be interesting to have access to.
