Returning to the fold

Mongoose
I was a huge fan of ACTA back when it was B5, but fell out with the Noble Armada setting. When I heard about the Star Fleet stuff I decided to have another look. I've had a look through the site, some reviews and this forum and have a few questions.

First. Is there anyone in the south Essex area or London who would be willing to run an intro or two for me?

Second. Does the new stuff run as smoothly as B5 era? By that I mean I felt that the B5 ACTA rules were very intuitive. Is the same true for the Star Fleet rules?

Third. I can only find a tactica for the Klingons. Is there one for the rest of the fleets? If not, could someone run through the basic playstyles, advantages and disadvantages of the various fleets?

Thanks
Tom

Overall rulewise I would say both NA and starfleet version are improvement. Not that much of a fan of point system but apart from that they are nice. I particulary like the critical system which is less of a random(though now at least in noble armada criticals can be bit...unimportant. At least with decados/vuldrok/hazat fleets. Star fleet with lot more precise and devastating could affect bit).

My problems with either are more of stylistics. NA fleets just feel bit bland for me with not that interesting background and SF ships are all kinda samey and too expensive for shelf sitting.

Seriously considering about altering B5 rules to be more akin to newer rulesystems. Improved rulesystem and my favourite setting of them all combined :) Sweet. Then if only a) models would be available again b) I would have somebody to play with real models. Vassal is nice but doesn't beat miniatures but doubtful there's that many mongoose game players in finland...

Thanks. Sounds good, though it's only really SF stuff that I'm interested in.

My sentiments exactly.

Well rulewise I would say you aren't going to be disappointed so if the background and models ring a bell with you then you should enjoy. For me it goes:

"It's a star trek..."
"It's a BABYLON 5!"

Yeah I'm a B5 fanboy :D Waiting eagerly on the echoes of all our conversation book 2 as it is. For me sight of centauri fleet engaging narns engage my imagination more than federation vs klingons.

But this is purely subjective thing and something Mongoose simply cannot fix even if they made perfect ruleset and perfect models.

Not that I'm saying SF is bad game. Actually I think it's best spaceship game currently running and rulewise improvement over the B5 version.

I agree with this statement. The conflicts in B5 were more "natural" to the story than the SFU stuff, especially given the "official" Star Trek canon. While I have the book and some minis on order for SF, B5 just really is my favorite. The nature of the conflicts are so much better and it is easy to justify an engagement story- or fluff-wise. Star Trek was about exploration, not combat.

Chris, that's why the Star Fleet Universe has so much fluff about conflicts. Not everyone gets along perfectly. :) Of course, since this is a wargame, it tends to focus on the fighting part although there were many years when the Klingons and Federation got along just fine. Much of the the history was peaceful, but it isn't much fun in the wargame part to have your Klingon ship hail the Federation ship to find out what the weather was like on Iridima and was The Space Pig Is Dancing Bar still open.

Jean,

I understand a war game isn't fun without a war. I guess I'm just saying that I enjoy the conflicts within the B5 setting over the SFU setting. I've been reading lots of stuff about the SFU since I found out about the ACtA game and I definitely want to play the game and the minis, I just prefer the B5 storylines largely because they are "canon" and SFU is not. Not to say one is bad but just my opinion. I love seeing the fleet battles in B5.

While I prefer B5 to the various Trek incarnations I would like to give this game a go. So, anyone know where I could get an intro game in Essex/London?

What.
Nonsense. Its was clear to any intelligent person that those (Imperialist Klingon warmongers/Expansionist lying Federation thieves delete as appropriate) were simply biding their time till they were ready to attack the peace loving and non aggressive (Federation/Klingon Empire delete as appropriate)

It closed down, bunch of damm Federation concerned citizens from the Federation Society for the Protection of Space Pigs and other related Stellar Beings. This was just before the Tellarites sued them into non existence due to that rather embarrassing forum topic about whether or not the inhabitants of Tellar deserved the society’s protection, the one that was leaked and went Federation wide with more than 600 million hits.

Didn't an enterpising Ferengi buy it up as a 'cultural centre' and try to get it protected status as a part of 'cultural history'; allowing him to keep it open and turn a nice profit in the process?

That’s the place. Still he had to replace the Dancing Space Pig with a hologram and its a really cheap and nasty one.

Still he gets a fair amount of passing trade, people just pop in to see how bad the legendary Holo Space Pig dance really is

its now called the naked Gorn, And she is very sexy with lovely yellow eyes, long sharp teeth, and that beautiful emerald scaly skin glistening from the oil rubbed all over it.
