An alternative to the DSMS

Lyrell'e

Banded Mongoose
After looking at both sides of the 1000D M-drive limit, and the DSMS system from Deepnight Revelation, a possible alternative occurred to me that I recall seeing so I went back looking through High Guard.

The Gravity Well Generator.

Now this definitely appears inspired by the interdiction fields in Star Wars, but nevertheless this system creates a gravity field strong enough to cause disruption in jump drives as if near a normal planetary gravity well. This makes jumping dangerous etc.

So logically this is a gravity field that M-drives could interact with and not operate at reduced efficiency. So you place a gravity well generator on a single ship in a fleet and have it operate as a kind of deep space support ship. Alternatively you could have a GW Generator that produces a field only 1-4 km in radius-pointless for interdicting jumps but allowing each ship to use it's maneuver drive freely even in the middle of the Great Rift. Of course the ship would have to shut off it's grav field before it could use it's own Jump Drive. In the case of the reduced radius GW generator it would still have the same cost, volume, and power requirements.

This system is of course "Exotic Tech". It is also base TL16 so would not be at all common (Darrian pre-Maghiz, Vincennes, Ancients, Experimental prototypes etc) but it does provide an interesting way to deal with the 1000D limit other then DSMS or just ignoring the limit. As far as the exotic tech aspect, Droyne Leader Yusote's ship in Mysteries of the Ancients (Page 159) has a Tachyon Cannon bay on it so there is some precedence for this.

Opinions?

Energy conservation, provided you are extracting more energy from the wind than you are gaining in vehicle kinetic energy the law is happy.

It was pretty obvious that any substantial gravity well can be used as an anchor, including a large enough hull that the manoeuvre drive happens to be inhabiting.

Unfortunately I do not think it was ever mentioned just what the amount of mass was. Not sure if say a 1,000,000 dT hull could do it. I figured the GW generator since it has to be changing gravity constants could "amplify" the effective mass of the carrying ship and allow it to be it's own anchor. Thing I am not sure on (For balance purposes really) is whether it could only do this for itself or get the full gravity well radius and allow all ships in that field to move at full M-drive rating.

Ironically, the gravitic field you would need to stabilize a neutron superfluid would provide you with the anchor your M-drive needed. Heh.

Double dip.
