Reactions to the State of Mongoose addresss.

BFE is the one game that didn't get a major mention in the State of the Company news, because the NDAs are still holding up any announcements. So I wouldn't classify it as :( so much as :|. That is to say: no news is no news. The follow-up on the minis thread makes it sound like there will still be pre-painted BFE-themed games, in the same scale. This is not a bad thing. Without details, like a list of game concepts and release dates, I can't classify it as a good thing either. For the moment, it's just a thing.

The actual post-NDA announcement is where all the excitement will be for us BFE players...

According to the announcement, the earliest you'll see anything for BFE is the end of 2008, and that will be unpainted, metal miniatures.

Considering Mongoose's track record for delivering what they promise, much less on time, that probably means something around 2010.
:o

Seriously, what's the point? It's so far off that they'd be better off not saying anything. At least it would prevent their credibility from taking yet another hit if they can't deliver what they predict.

Back into my hole.......

Apparently we are reading different announcements...

I'm probably in the minority, but I actually look forward to the bare metal unpainted minis. I enjoy painting and since I've already bought and painted Eureka/Kriegspiel USMC and British figures, I'm really looking forward to the quality of the metals that MP will produce.

Also, special rules for smaller scale BFEVO firefights, who's not excited about that?

Yeah, the unpainted minis aren't the worst thing ever, though prepaints were a large part of the game appeal to me. Hopefulyl the minis will be cheaper! I assume we'll be getting resin/plastic kits for vehicles?

I think I've pretty much comvinced myself it's the EA Battlefield series. They cross multiple zones from past to future. With Halo having the Cliqx thing and the Starcraft boardgame out now, I'm sure they see a potential market for it.

The miniature thing doesn't really bother me as my 1/72 proxies are going to become my standard.

So when are the new rules going to be released ? And /or more importantly new units stats coming our way ?

Matt

Hmmm. AT-43 is beginning to look mighty inviting just now. I say that as a gamer who has spent a sackload of cash (well, to me anyway) on BF:E and was very happy with it. When the hiatus was announced I viewed it with a reasonably open mind, pleased that Mongoose was able to recognise a problem and had the cojones to deal with it in a way that would make the fanbase pretty grumpy in some corners. I continued to expand my forces, buying both Mongoose products where I could find them, and proxy stuff (just had my spiffing BTR80's arrive this morning, in fact).

Now, however, we find out that there will be no new product until Q3 2008, when we may get bare metal minis. Prepaints won't be back until 2009, maybe.

I realise that my whining about the situation isn't going to change anything. You clearly have a business and development plan with party X, a plan which is going to take some time to put in place and execute (I would suggest, as a project manager, that you review your timescales in light of how long it's taken to sort out the NDA stuff - you need to be working on realistic, even pessimistic, estimates of timescales).

My concerns are twofold, really. Firstly, with such a long delay between product, even with continued support in S&P, you are going to lose any inertia the brand built up with the launch. The initial "debates" around the pre-paint quality generated a certain ammount of buzz about the game, and you have clearly built up a dedicated fanbase, as a brief look at the boards will show. So, you run the risk of losing those fans to another game, and potentially having to re-launch the whole brand.

My second concern is that BF:E was, at the time of launch, the only real high-profile, professionally produced (sorta - my rulebook still dosn't close properly) modern skirmish rule set that I am aware of. With a 6-9 month hiatus, you run the risk of somone pipping you to the post with a nice set of rules to use, say, all that Dragon and FoV armour in 1/72nd. I've heard rumors of a modern skirmish mod for Cold War Commander, for instance, that could gobble up the market for rules.

But, I guess you know this business, as a member of it, better than I, as it's market (said without sracasm or irony). We shall see.

What will be, will be.

However, in the mean time til the new rulebook come out, will you still continue give us new units to play with in S&P since we bought the current rulebook or is that on hold too based on the stinky nda and the new stuff coming from the deal ?

Q3, 2008?!

Well, now I won't feel bad having started to collect Flames of War armies if we won't see anything from Mongoose over 10 months!

I was gonna do my part, but now... meh.

Same here. FOW has taken up my time and gaming budget. BFE is great fun, but with limited support for the time being WW2 is my current game of choice.

I play a lot of FoW and I'm beginning to get saturated with it. I'm not keen on the new approach of relesing specific regiment/battle books along with specialist miniatures for them.

I've also played a bot of Blitzkreig commander, which is verey, very good, but suited to a smaller scale, I think. Pendrakens 10mm WW2 stuff works quite well with these rules, and the BKC rulebook should be held up as an example to other manufacturers on how to make an "all in one book" game (Mongoose, mare you listening?).

Blitzkreig Commander is a great game, a good example of well balanced system complex enough but easy to manage and pick up. I'd agree with G that the scale gets better lower (as does the price) though i only really play it in 15mm. The quality of the book is top drawer too. Another great WW2 game system and Rule book is Rules of engagement, dodgey cover but 5 star content.

Back to painting US Para's until the end of the NDA for me...

I've got to say I'm more than a bit disappointed with this too. I've hung on with the NDA, mostly because I know how they work and how frustrated Matt must be with it. Nothing is worse than having the info people want and not being able to say anthing about it. But I can only wait so long, and it seems like my waiting will be in vain. Most of the appeal for me in this was the pre-painted minis (even if the quality was debatable). If we aren't seeing anything new come out in another 6-9 months (not including the current drought we've been in), and then in bare metal, I can't say I'll be interested anymore. I used to love GW (as evil and greedy as they are) mostly for the looks of the minis and the fluff. I stopped playing because while I was pretty decent at painting, I realized really hated painting hundreds of minis. If my only alternative is going back to painting, I hate to say I'd pick space marines over british infantry (ESPECIALLY if they are just ONE piece). I got really excited when I saw the SST Evo stuff, because I love the book and the roughneck chronicles, but would never play because there was no way I was going to paint hundreds of bugs. Without the SST prepaints, I guess I still won't get to play.

I can't say I'll get rid of my BFE stuff, as I've sunk alot into this already , both with the real stuff and 3rd party. I may even see if I can hoard some more stuff if it goes on clearance. But if we wind up with unpainted minis and multiple rulebooks that are necessary to play (another GW-ish thing that really pisses me off), I might just have to stick with the legacy rules (providing the rulebook is still in one piece in a year). And if, god forbid, it goes to a random booster box I'm definately out.

I appologize if I seem a little bitter, and I really hope my current expectations for BFE are wrong. I'd love to see this really succeed. I don't have much interest in WWII gaming, and have no desire to go back to GW.

Well, I have mixed feelings. I am already disapointed that BF only lasted 3 waves. Now they are going Metal. I like to paint so thats fine, I just have concerns of the scale now. On a positive note, I am happy that the game goes on. The question is however, where is it going from here? Only time will tell. I am REAL disapointed that Starship Troopers isn't going pre-paint.

Until then, I am perfectly happy with what I have and believe it or not, I still plan to keep building my armies up. I just won a resin F-35 from Ebay and have a LAV-AD inbound from Poland! My MEA army will be growing too as I plan to order more Mongoose foot troops with my monthly MI order. Also, I am running a Battlefield Evolution Event tommorow, the popular Swift Wolf! Evo is not the only game in town either. In my gaming group, we play everything! Too many games, not enough time!

Between Evocommand and S&P, I hope support for the game continues until we see more from Mongoose.

Unfortunately for me, no pre-paints means no more Battlefield Evolution for me. I don't enjoy the painting side of the hobby at all, and even if I did a nerve condition in my hand pretty much precludes me ever painting something up to even BF:Evo's standard. I guess I should be thankful that someone actually did some modern pre-paints, but I can't help being a bit disappointed.
