Railgun Autofire on Large bays an issue?

I think the rather short range, and high volume/cost for ammo balances that out....it's a really nasty weapon if your enemy lets you get that close.

Just wondering if people thought if it was rather good compared to what is happening with other weapons on the upgrade from medium to large. For mine I'm happy enough to have a different kind of large bay option...

I would say rather useless...

Against a big armoured warship the damage of 4D + 4[added dice] + 4[added Effect] ≈ 14 + 4 + 4 ≈ 22. After armour 7 damage per shot and 6 shots, so average damage 42, less damage than the corresponding fusion bay, at shorter range.

We could use it to produce large amounts of crits against very large ships, but again at short (well, medium) range.

We could of course easily incinerate a Free Trader, but any 500 dT bay should do that...

Yeah - its in line with the Large Bay paradigm - significantly improved to-hit chance and therefore improved crit chance. With that High Auto Rating that could really stack up crits especially when considering large ships that can only be crit by large bays. This bay probably gives you the highest crit-chance chance-to-ton efficiency:

6 shots at +4 to hit. (yes you'd have to make it medium range).

I actually have a potential issue thinking of this: A Mass Driver or Fusion Large bay.. has the potential to instantly destroy systems on a critical? Is this accurate? Do we want this? Their average damage is 100... so that is a Severity 8 critical if they hit with effect 6+? Do we want single medium and large bays instantly destroying drives on a hit?

I feel like in addition to the 2,000, 10,000 and 100,000 bay size thresholds we need:

"And the severity is per 50 damage"
"and the severity is per 100 damage"
"And the severity is per 1000 damage"

? Sorry - this just hit me as a big bobo we may have missed. Thoughts?

Yes, now that you point it out, this is a major problem. Unless the target dodges, a Large bay will crit more often than not at Long range or less. For each 7500 meson spinal we can instead mount ~15 large bays. Assuming roughly equal hit chances we will get 15 high severity crits for each spinal hit. In the region of 20 lvl 6 crits is a temporary mission kill, the crits will be repaired but it will take some time. Dodging makes this much worse for the spinal.

If we look at adventure class ships in the Core book, 1 severity per 10 tons is roughly 1 severity / 5% - 10% of Hull. We can use that as a guideline.

On the other hand, in combat, shit happens. Combat should not be a mathematical exercise boiling down to: I have bigger guns, so I win. I would leave room for accidental crippling crits, as e.g. HMS Hood and KMS Bismarck suffered.
