Raiders Blockade runner

Howarth

Mongoose
I have recently been plying the raiders and have found that the raiders lack a ship to deal with the Blockade scenario. If your opponents are playing some of the league races then this seriously limits your choice of ships.
The Nova is too slow, our group has decided to give it a speed of 6 to maych the rest of the raiders fleet.
The other ships just could not take the beating to run the blockade.
What I am proposing is new ship for the raiders.

Raid Level

Speed 10 (to out run most of the war ships but not all)
Turns 1/45
Hull 6 (so it take a bit of a beating)
Hull Points 30
Crew 40

Heavy Pulse Cannon range 10 AD 10 Foward

Interceptors 1, Anti fighter 2, Jump Engine, Lumbering

This is what we think.
Any comments would be welcome as long as they are positive :) or at least constructive :)

in one way, i think designing a ship purely for a specific scenario is stupid. but conversely, they are raiders, they should have some fast blockade runner style ships. that said they should just buy Ikortas, those brakiri will sell to anyone! :-)

and keep things tied up in paper work for a week or three

It needs somthing to change it from a random tough bbut fast ship to a blockade runner. I'd suggest:
Redundant systems? A blockade runner is expected to take more than average damage.
A low AD but good range turret weapon. Enough to disuade persuit.
Stealth. Make it a smuggler.

I like the idea - always keen to see new ships - any idea of a model?

could take out the majority of the guns and give it more turns / dodge to make it something that just runs and evades not fights. Re stealth could gven it stealth as long as it only moves half speed ors something similar? :)

How about this ?

Blockade Runner - Road Runner class Raid
There are many reasons for ships to take the risk of running blockades – ranging from drug smuggling, slave trading through to humanitarian efforts and inserting spies. The ships that undertake this dangerous work range vastly in appearance but are almost always built for speed and agility. Most carry substantial point defences and reinforced hull and armour.

Speed: 10 Turn: 2/ 45 Hull: 5 Damage: 28/6 Crew: 32/8
Troops: 1 Craft: none
Special Rules: Afterburner, Agile, Anti-fighter 2, Atmospheric, Dodge 5+, Interceptor 1, Jump Engine,
In Service: 2190+

Weapon Range Arc AD Special
Light Matter Cannon 8 F 4 AP, Double Damage
Twin Particle Turret 8 T 6 Twin Linked, Weak

What the Raiders really need is a half-decent fast cruiser at raid level. Something that can intimidate merchant ships into surrender and chase them down if they try to run, but out-run most any warship in space. No fighters, decent front and flank guns, reasonable damage and probably low hull for its level. Classic pirate ship stuff.

These are some Raider designs I knocked up for an abortive campaign at ID games a while back. They're statted for 1e, so would need to have some secondary batteries swapped for AF stats, et.c.

Raider Drakkar Cruiser

Developed by a shadowy Raider cartel who needed a light cruiser that could be built rapidly and in secret in civilian shipyards. The Drakkar was used as a mercenary warship capable of going toe-to-toe with naval vessels - at least briefly - and for 'deniable' operations funded by unscrupulous governments and corporations.

A lighter consort to the Drakkar (this ship was actually developed first).

Raider Brigantine

The Earth Alliance designed the Hermes class transport to be built in civilian yards, and large numbers were sold to non-military operators. It was inevitable that some of these ships would find their way into Raider hands.

Class/PL.............Brigantine/Patrol
Hull ...................4
Speed................10

* All these ships have conventional internal hangars, unlike the Strike Carriers' launch rails. If other fighters are availible, they may replace the Delta -Vs.

These ships are based on designs in B5W's Raiders and Privateers. And if there is a copyright issue, I never wrote that.

Some nice ideas coming out here i really like the Road runner class. That is a realistic ship for the raiders.

I wonder if Matt has any views on this?

As for models, these ships could be deliberately built to resemble warships for diguise or deception; they could also use standard military components.

You could use any older League, Centauri, Narn or EA hulls, and/or kitbashes. The point is, these ships are built by, or at least for, the Raiders, so the ships weapons fit/engines/special features will not be the same as the originals. New wine in old bottles, if you like.

.

....or directly the opposite a la Atlantic convoy Q-ship. They might be heavily modded but civvy looking ships. So use one of the civilian ships, with a few bits stuck on if really necessary....

Triggy came up with some cool rules for Custom Raider vessels - kind enough to let me use in Darkness Rising but it is also here on the forum - worth a look. :)
