Question: Contents of Monsters of Legend

Mage

Mongoose
Sorry for all the threads, but each one addresses a different subject. Can anyone who is willing and kind enough, also in possession of Monsters of Legend, be able to tell me what monsters are in it? I need more monsters for my games, but I am afraid if I buy this it will just be a rehash of Runquest 1 & 2's Monsters and Monster Colliseum (I have both). I don't want to spend money on a regurgitation, unless there is a lot of new content that proves useful.

Ah, if that is the case I will give the book a wide berth. No point in buying anything I already essentially have, with a few minor tweaks and a different cover. It would be nice to get more Monster Books like D&D has, but I don't see Mongoose doing this, unfortunately.

That's a great help. I won't be getting this book then, as it is primarily a repeat of previous material I have already. I wish Mongoose would do a few monster books, they are a great utility for players. Looks like after this campaign I'll try my hand at fourth ed D&D.

Unless the reviews are rave and 5th ed is awesome of unforseen magnitude, I am not gonna buy into it. I already have 4th ed, there is already a tonne of useful books out for it, and I will continue with that. Will 5th ed really change the face or role playing or enrich our lives? No.

Not that 4th ed came close to doing that either!

When I popped in to see Matthew and buy Pirates of Legend and Historia Rodentia I mentioned that I was fairly dissapointed that the Monsters book did not include many more "mundane" animals or the more exotic stuff.

Matthew said that lots of other people have voiced the same opinion. So I would not be at all surprised to hear them say they have plans for Monsters of Legend II & III. It would certainly make sense for them to do it!

Oh, and the AD&D 2nd Ed Monstrous Manual is an awsum addition to a bookcase....I was given it and other 2nd ed books recently and have barely skimmed the surface looking at it.

Having play tested D&D Next, I'm not convinced it has anything new to offer other than a new Edition of books to spend money on ...

The endless churning out of new editions is one of the reasons I will not buy any new WOTC stuff.

However, 4th Edition didn't set the world on fire, either ...

Indeed, but as I said, I already have fourth ed books, easier to just continue on with that.

That is nice to hear, but I remember mentions during the first ed of Mongoose Runequest that there would be 3 or 4 monster manuals done, but there ended up being only 2 if I recall correctly, and the second book was a let down due the content domination of all the weird Gloranthan stuff in it.

Oh I totally understand... it's why I stayed with D&D 3.5 not even moving to Pathfinder.

And, I have 4th ed books too... original three core, FR Players & Campaign guide... and three of those horrid "essentials" books. The essentials I got because it was vaguely hinted it was the "v4.5 that would never be called v4.5" and I was in a Dead Sun 4th ed campaign that was using the essentials.

The other books? well I got my core books 2 weeks before they released on the street (because I was working for WotC at the time), and now they & the FR Campaign guide are signed by everyone on staff (Gencon 2008/PAX Prime 2008) AND personalized by Ed Greenwood (at Gencon). They all signed the FR campaign guide but Ed's signature was not personalized as they had him sign a box or two for everyone.

But autographs alone don't bring these books up to "oh yes must keep". It's what Rob Heinsoo and Andy Collins put in my books... a free reroll from Rob, and a free "nat 20" from Andy. one use only for each but there is no way I'm going to use either of them and then mark up the book? hell no.
