Question about what are the best paints out there to use?

I know there are a lot of good brands of paints out there. I useually use Games Workshop paints. However, they lack washes and other types of paints. Can any one tell me what would be great to expand the paint collection I already have. I have just about all the Games Workshop paints expect their Foundation Paints. Any help would be great.

That's a good brand. They just don't have that many wahes. Plus they just have such a large selection. In some cases, If I wanted to paint a Earth Alliance Omega Destroyer. I just don't know what type of grey I should use or mix? one point in time. There was a wash out there called Armored wash. It came in handy.

Actually, the new GW washes that just came out a couple months ago are outstanding. They are some of the best washes I've ever used and unlike a lot of them, they actually dry in smooth gradients and with a matte finish. Very nice overall.

Anyway, just FYI...

The only issue with the GW washes is that they are very thin, it does feel as if they have been watered down, so you are paying for less

Other than that they are quite good.

The P3 line is also very good, and I'd recommend checking them out if you can get that in your area.

I use predominantly GW with, up to now, Rowney inks as washes / glazes etc. Use GW beceause they, amongst other good qualities, easy to obtain, (until my local GW shop closed last week).

Silashand - I ordered up a box of the new GW washes a couple of days ago, good to know your opinion on them.

I recently got into WWII wargaming and I use Vallejo paints for these figures and vehicles, due to authentic colours.

I have toyed with the idea of trying out Reaper's paints anyone got a comment on their ranges.

I have some Vallejo paints as well for my WWII stuff. Very good paints overall.

I recently threw away my GW paints and bought the Reaper Master series paint range instead.
GWs pants works but since I wanted to Airbrush with the paints as well these are not a good option so a change were needed.

Since I mix a lot of colors my self I wanted a range with dropper bottles. Both Vallejo and Reaper have those. So I decided that I would get one of those.

After reading a lot of reviews and testing some Vallejo paints I decided on Reaper. My reasons for going with Reaper were:

- Reaper adheres to the surface better. Vallejo paints have a tendancy to rubb off after drying if you happen to touch it.

- Vallejo paints have to be shaken vigorously for a quite a long time before it is properly mixed. Reaper paints have a little metal skull in the bottle so just giving the bottle 2-4 shakes and it's ready to go.

- The Triad colour system that Reaper have based their range on is fantastic. Much of the time you can just grab three Triad bottles from the paint box and you have a ready to go Shade, Base and Highligt set.
A drop of Glaze medium into the Shade colour and you instantly have a color matched wash as well.

- Reapers Master range are larger than Vallejos.

- Reaper were cheaper.

- The reviews compairing them I could find seemed mostly to be pro Reaper.

- Reapers caps on the bottles don't accumulate dried paint as the Vallejo does.

- Reapers had better metallics and skin colors

If possible get a test sampel of each range you are considering and try them first to see which you like better.

I have used Citadel paints for so many years (the GW Stuff) I just know how they perform. I have heard good things about Valerjo paints, but I just personally don't like change.

This 2.5 Edition of ACTA? Scares the crap out of me! Change is bad!

Scipio - Thanks for the summary on Reaper paints. I admit the metallics and the triad scheme are the two things that attract me, but your other points are also excellent. I buy Reaper figures fairly regularly, (long term large diorama project I am collecting figures for), so based on your recomendation I will give them a trial.

Reaper paints looks like a good brand to get since I like the Triad idea.

For those who paint EA miniatues. Just wondering what type of grey do you any of you use. Just a thought?

I too like Reaper Master series, but I don't like their metallics. I picked up some Vallejo paints, but haven't used them yet. I love GW metals.

I don't know if you have a GW near you, but I know at least at the locations near me I can take in a model (preferably one of theirs) and get information on how to use their products, do a painting demo, and get lessons on the product you use. This I think to me makes the Citadel paints superior, as the others don't have that option, you can't sit down with a real person from Reaper and get a lesson on highlighting, or applying a real good clean thin coat of paint. Things like that are just key.

Once you know how to put your paints on and cleanly paint between the lines without your paint looking all clumpy, you can do anything.

What don't you like about the Reaper metallics? I find them very good.

GWs metallics and washes are actually good too. However a lot of the other paints area really not very good at all.

Vallejos metallics are known to be bad. At least this is what my Vallejo using friends tells me.

A few of the GW metallics seem to also disappeared from the range in their last shakeup. e.g the copper metallic I was going to use for my Dilgar fleet. Ok I can mix some, but I wanted a base line consistency over the fleet. (Hence my thoughts v Reaper).

The GW silver & gold range remains good however.
