Q for Mongoose on Ship Stats

Would someone have a quick look at the stats for the 2 royal navy destroyers the JKN and the tribal.

Says the JKN is a later smaller ship with less guns and more torpedoes. It does indeed have an impressive array of torpedoes.

It also has lots of guns and the Tribal which was a big gun destroyer has almost none.

I suspect the secondary armament for these two ships has been switched in typesetting.

Could someone clarify whether I am talking rubbish or not?

I really like the rules, they seem to be good solid simple but fun rules. Big success Matt, well done.

The only "issue" and I use the term losely with VAS over ACTA, is that as B5 is fiction you can adjust the ships to tweak them into the points categories. This is not so easy to do with "real" warships, as a result you do appear to have more ships that are "half way" between two points bands and you have had to make a call as to where to put them. This will be a negligable point fr historical scenarios (which of course are rare in ACTA), but could prove a little more contentious in tournament play.

Personally I have already worked out my tournament fleet to exploit the points system and eagerly await the first tournament.

I don't have a copy with me, however, are you looking at Attack Dice or Damage Dice? Lots of attack dice with only 1 DD each don't match up to fewer AD with higher DD.

IIRC the Tribal should be 2AD, 1DD and the JKN 1AD, 1DD (something like 2AD and 5AD for torpedoes respectively). I think I mentioned in the "typos" thread that the AD for the JKN has been erroneously set at 4.

Powergaming scumbag :P

Come and get it you weak effeminate westerner, the empire of the rising sun will crush you underfoot

JKN destroyer typo, sorry I missed that bit of the thread, yes changing the ad from 4 back to 1 would fix the issue.

Wulf can you explain the comment about high DD means more than high AD, it just kind of looked like it even'd out to me, as I haven't played a game yet would be eager to hear the explanation.

As DM (cor, DM... ) pointed out, there was an actual error (from Mongoose? never!) on the JKM stats, so it's not relevant to this case.

However, VaS is a different animal to ACtA when it comes down to damage. With multiple damage dice after a hit (which many, but not all, weapons have), even a single lucky hit can cause multiples of damage. So, with Weak weapons you're better off with high DD. With big guns, it's usually 1 AD and multiple DD per barrel.

I've got three words for you. . . Iowa clas battleship.

And what's the best escort for an Iowa class battleship? Another Iowa class battleship, plus a fistful of destroyers to deal with any pesky subs!

Bring it!

I have one word for you, BELFGRANO :P

I do not think my Yamato class mega dreadnought has anything to fear from your admittedly descent Iowa class battleship

BELFGRANO's though I am not sure about? Is this a secret weapon I have not heard of? I am sure it is nothing that a long lance or 10 can not handle...

Not if its some sort of hovership which floats a few feet above the water, what're your fancy metal fish with flatulence gonna do about that eh?

That was what the LAST Yamato "mega-dreadnought" thought last Monday. . . till the Iowa put her down like a rabid dog!!

Use magnetic fuses, set for shallow running and hit them with the plume on their undersides :)

Well, errr....

Obviously the crazy hoverness means that they always float at least a certain height above water and the ship wuld just rise with the plume (bit uncomfortable for the crew...)

I should give up now, i think seriousness went out of the porthole...

BELFGRANO?

What the hell is that?

Nick

Its Belgrano with an F, cos I was sneezing at the time with a rotten cold :P

Belgrano? Belgrano? Are you mentioning the ship lost to the Argentinians in the Falklands war to a British sub? If so, since Victory at Sea is a WW2 game (for now) you might just refer to it by its original name of USS Phoenix then perhaps. It is a great warship, but hardly is in the running as against the "big boys" such as Iowa or Yamato. I do like your choice however, since the Brooklyn class of seven ships and the near-sisters the St. Louis and Helena (to a slightly modified design) are my very favorite of all warships (regardless of size). Armed with fifteen fast-firing 6" guns, these ships were larger than many "heavy" cruisers
of the time. Not only that, I just think they were great looking ships! Here is the USS Phoenix/General Belgrano at the attack of Pearl Harbor (yup, it was there!).

Viewing this back in the 80's I almost cried because a US veterans group had been negociating with Argentina to get the ship back as a war memorial because it was the last ship in existance as a survivor of the Pearl Harbor Raid. The veteran being interviewed on television had tears running down his face. The loss of life was yet another example of what happens in war (over 700 lost iirc), but in retrospect even with all of the controversy of its sinking I don't blame the Brits. I knew more than most back then just how very deadly this ship was to the Brit ships near the Falklands. In an age of missiles many today would laugh off this ship's guns, but I sure would not.
