Origin of the Word "Terragen" ?

Does anyone know anything about the word "Terragen" and what the legal status for publication?

I know that David Brin used it in his Uplift books, starting in 1980.

I also know that White Wolf published a book called https://whitewolf.fandom.com/wiki/Aberrant:_Teragen in 2000

Brin used Terragens, which is not a plural.
