Opinions wanted on these miniatures as proxy MI for SST

Hi all,

Im thinking of picking up some of the mid tech sci-fi miniatures from denizen miniatures to use as proxy MI light armour troopers for SST, and i would like your opinions on them. They are obviously based on the colonial marines seen on ALIENS but i think they look the part.

They are between 28-30mm with some of the female troopers being more 27mm. Do you think this should be ok size wise? Im waiting for my SST starter set to arrive so i have nothing to compare size with. I have read that the SST MI troopers are quite large for 28mm miniatures, do you think these will look too small side by side?

They'd be absolutely fine as stand ins, particularly for a lightly equipped militia unit.

Only concern would be scale matching up.

They are pretty close to the colonial marines like! If I could convert them by replacing their rifle weapons with the hasslefree Pulse Rifle rip offs..... Perfect.

The SST figures were pretty good sized too. Though I always thought the plastic figs were a pain in the arse to put together.

I think they'd be fine-we use all kinds of proxies since our boxes of the regular MI aren't all constructed yet. If anything, just put a fatter base on them and they'd work like a charm.

The plastics aren't that difficult to put together IMO. I've actually been doing more bashing with them than actually making the generic builds.

Right now I'm working on my Howling Commandos custom Pathfinders using different bits for arms and gear and using the Pig Iron Hvy Inf visor heads

Well i went ahead and got some of the denizen miniatures and i have to say that i think they're fab!

Really nicely sculpted, proportions are nice and very little flash to clean up. They are smaller than the SST miniatures but as im not going to be fielding light armour troops alongside power armour troops it wont be a problem.

In short id recomend these minis for anyone looking for scifi marines etc

There's a reason for that. The rulebook clearly states on the introduction page that SST is 30mm Scale. Not 28. What most of us think are 28s though, are really 25mm scale. Example, Games Workshop minis are often called 28mm scale, but they're Heroic 25mm. Or at least 40K and Fantasy are. Their Lord of the Rings minis are True 25mm. As are huge numbers of fantasy/medieval minis out there. I can't say for sure what mongoose were trying to go for on the M.I., but now that I have multiple packs to compare here and there, I can tell you that you're pretty safe putting anything between 25mm and 30mm in the game as proxies since the scale and armour designs for the Power Armoured figures can vary wildly.

Also, I do highly recommend proxying the LAMI. I have two packs of them and even though I am still painting them up for personal use, I find their poses and body proportions really disappointing. So the rest of the LAMI Company I'm building will probably be made up of something else. Something cheaper and less disappointing. Like modern British, Germans or Americans from some other company. Or go with....Oh what was it...I can't seem to remember the minis company now. Grrr. I'll post back with it when I remember the company.
