observation planes

Does anone have a list of observation planes??

I'm looking for the right models to use as observation planes for my German, Italian, British, US and Japanese ships...

I have a Supermarine Walrus as the GB one, is that correct??
I've also got Arado 196 for the German ones, are these more suited to attack aircraft rather than observation?

regards

With regard to spotter planes it very much depends upon the scale as to whether or not you need to worry too much. After a long chat with the guy at Navwar on Saturday (a marvellous chap!) at 1:3000 scale you only need to worry about whether or not the plane is the right sort of shape, has the right wing set and the right sort of tail plane. If you are using larger scales then the detail becomes more apparent and therefore more important.

You were not specific as to the scale you are using but certainly at 1:3000 scale most seaplane models are much of a muchness.

I think you are correct, by the way, about the Walrus being used as a spotter if memory serves me correctly the Prince of Wales carried Walrus aircraft.

what planes were in service varied thru-out the war but i'd suggest the following;
Italy - ship-based RO-43. land based SM-79.
GB - ship-based Walrus. land-based Catalina float plane.
Germany - ship-based Arado 196. land-based Condor.
Japan - ship-based Mitsubishi 'Pete' and Aichi 'Jake' (both types carried at the same time). land-based 'Mavis' floatplane.
US - ship-based Seahawk. land based as GB (catalina is sometimes called PBY in US service.
hope this helps.

I'm using the 1:1200 stuff. It's the smallest size that retains some sort of semblance of a particular type, although the 1:2400 stuff that comes on the GHQ is instantly recognisable despite being half the size, but not available in any sort of range.

I'm finding that planes get shot up pretty quickly when attacking moderate size ships. I guess this is the idea, planes should go for softer targets...

enjoying the gaming so far!

I have the walrus for the UK - CAP AERO one - very nice it is too...

I'm just casting up some little textured bases to stick them on.
Also making up some wreck counters for ships and planes.

I'm going to do soe waterplumes to mark all the misses - my tables a bit bare at the moment, just ships and sea.

I'd really like to see a wake trail left - maybe some chalk...

Had a little go last night but got diverted by my 28m ancients. Booked my pal in for another session and put an order in for some more ships!
