Mongoose
Nuera is the world described in Wraith Recon, the recently released supplement. It is essentially an archetypical high-fantasy world with many races, fireballs, magic weapons etc. but the depth and subtlety of a RuneQuest setting.

Mongoose could further develop the world as a core game world for the RQII system. The use of the world for such standard gaming is mentioned in the Wraith Recon book.

Nuera could meet the demand for a 'D&D' style game - an entry level into the RQ system to bridge the gap. Or, it could risk becoming yet another dull fantasy copycat world and lose all the distinctiveness of game worlds usually associated with RQ such as Glorantha, Elric, etc.

What do you think?

RuneQuest should not have one default setting.

In fact, it doesn't as it has 3 or 4 fairly/well detailed settings already.

I'd like to see more settings given several supplements and a few more given really detailed writeups.

Glorantha is good, but that is covered by at least 2 rules systems.

Because, y'know, there's a chronic world shortage of generic D&D style campaign worlds.

I've nothing against Nuera and Wraith recon. If you're going to do old school style setting, at least it has a novel twist with the fantasy special forces thing. I hope it does well and might even pick it up myself.

It's out there now though. If it suddenly starts selling like hot cakes then fine, followup supplements are the logical way to go. If it sells _realy_ well, maybe it'll become more popular that Glorantha. Then you can start talking about it becoming the default RQ setting.

Talking about doing that now, just days after release, is setting the cart before the horse.

One of RQ's strengths (in most if not all incarnations) has been its ease of consistent customization. The Elric and Clockwork & Chivalry worldbooks are great examples: They have their own feel while keeping mechanics that are internally consistent, balanced, and coherent with the core system. They are easily recognized as RQ.

So my vote is not to have a core fantasy world. Instead, I'd like to see Mongoose mostly publishing "building block" books, with world settings published as a secondary priority.

I like Glorantha a lot but it is very intimidating to the new folks. Very intimidating.
A think a generic fantasy world would be great but ... I would like to also see more world building material ....I guess.
I love the home-brewed world games best. They seem the best to play in and the best to run.

So perhaps we should re-think the way these materials are written. If we need supplements I would like things that address the small scale first.
This is how the final chapter of the Runequest II Rulebook says is the best way to run a game. Which I agree with. Start with things like home town and family clans.
That's what I would like to see, more material like "Apple Lane", "The Village of Hommlet" ... perhaps even "The City State of the Invincible Overlord" . Then have material that helps expand the players and the DMs world. Material that doesn't just help describe it. but inspire people to create the world.

For example "Call of Cuthulu" grew in popularity because players were inspired to tell their own stories, scary stories like those they had seen in scary movies. New RQ materials should light a fire under GMs to want to "tell" a story, a story that doesn't require 100 hours of research to prepare.

But personally I would rather see Mongoose spend money promoting basic MRQ2.

anyway that's my 2c.

It might be cool to create a backdrop for RQ within the community itself. It might be a great way to get a vanilla backdrop. The Wiki would be the ideal place to host such a venture... its just drumming interest in getting the ball rolling.

Wraith Recon? Makes me think of Ghost Recon the computer game...are the characters some type of special forces leathernecks in this game?

That's precisely what the characters are: Marine Force Recon, SAS etc.

The book is very good - rich in ideas, demonstrates how RQII can do high-fantasy and a very good (and very funny) opening scenario.

It would not be my cup of tea for an ongoing game, but it is great for a one-off or convention style game - fanstasy with a twist!

Really? So they use MP5s and grenades etc. to hose down orcs, or summit? So what's the catch?

Uber fantasy weapon equivalents!

A close look at the cover, and the text and art in the preview PDF, will give you a fair idea.
