New RQII Character Sheet

Could I also request that there is a review of the order given for Characteristics and Attributes respectively. The official sheet has Dex seemingly out of order - shouldn't it be 4th one down? - and the Attributes don't really tie to the most relevant characteristics either.

I'd like this order:

STR - Movement
CON - Combat Actions
SIZ - Damage Modifier
DEX - Strike Rank
INT - Magic Points
POW - Dedicated Power
CHA - Improvement Modifier

OK, so you'll never get an exact relevant fit, but at least they go together a bit more intuitively, with the combat info together, with the physical characteristics.

If you notice, I've re-ordered the characteristics so that they follow the same pattern as in earlier editions of the game...

I actually preferred the MRQ1 order.
STR, CON & DEX all together as physical charateristics
INT, POW & CHA as non-physical and
SIZ as a hinge stat. It made a lot of sense.

STR, CON, and SIZ are stats that you can actually see (or at least have a good guess about) when you meet a person.

DEX, INT, POW, and CHA only show when you start interacting with that person.

Earlier editions of the game didn't always get it right. Heresy, I know...

I didn't realise there was a 'right'. I could have ordered them alphabetically; I could have ordered them with 'intangible' characteristics first.

However, the order, STR, CON, SIZ, INT, POW, DEX and CHA has been the order in RQ and BRP games pretty much since the game began. Its ingrained in my psyche. To me, that order seemed natural - and still does. Funnily enough, I've never seen any criticism before of the characteristic ordering in any other RQ/BRP discussion...

Well the order in Call of Cthulhu is different - although that may be because they put them in a three column layout on the character sheet. Was their criticisms of the MRQ 1st ed order?

To me, STR, CON and SIZ are all linked together as they define the 'body' dimensions of the character, DEX and INT are like the controlling 'mind' stats, while POW and CHA are like 'soul stats'. But that's just me I suppose. Maybe it's too much of a 'D&Dism' for some people's tastes.

Actually, the main thing for me was that the Attributes don't tally that well alongside the Characteristics. Or at least, I couldn't get why the 'Improvement Modifier' wasn't alongside CHA, or why the combat stats weren't bunched together.

It's not a big deal, but if there is an open call to design a character sheet, I'm just lending my observations....

Of course there is. Its just that from 1000 roleplayers there will be 1500 opinions as to which order is right.

I have never QUITE understood why characteristics are not ordered alphabetically. The only system I can think of which does this is CODA.

In absence of any other overwhelming logic that seems like the easiest default order.

Which is as good a reason as any other. Not withstanding the alphabetical logic.

Possibly because this time around Mong seem to have addressed the bigger problems.

I can live with the order of Characteristics as is. It's not a biggie.

However, I do think the order of Attributes could be rejigged a little to tune in a bit better with the Characteristics opposite and/or to keep all the combat details together as much as possible.

One thing I can say about this character sheet is that it's orders of magnitude better than the Traveller eye-sore.

Anyone familiar with the FREE character sheet designer from nbos?

http://www.nbos.com/products/charsheet/charsheet.htm

It's really cluncky to use, but others with more time on their hands might make a better job with this.

If I win the lottery, I'll commission a programmer to make a drag-and-drop character sheet designer. Drag your desired boxes, boarders, etc. onto the sheet. Resize them, edit them, etc. Automatic snap to grid. etc. Shouldn't be too difficult to do.
