New/Old Mini box sets

So im looking into buying minis to play A Call to Arms but i have a question regarding the New and Old fleet box sets.....are the models the same in the following fleets

Shadow
Vorlon
Minbari

I'd like to get the old box sets becaues their simply WAY more cost efficient as you still get some of the big ships which are now ranging from 15-25 apiece.....and seeing as how you can still get some of the old box sets for 70-80 dollars....at least in the case of the minbarit you get $53.85 worth of sharlins alone not to mention the other vessels.....although it appears that the troligan got COMPLETELY changed to a new model which makes NO sense so not sure i could get away with buying the minbari reinforcements box even though it would also be a nice savings....

what is the best way to buy these fleets....piece meal/old sets/new sets?
any opinions/info would be appreciated as i have to decide so i can start buying before there no longer on the market :)

Having done so for the ISA and EA Early Years, I say, "Do it!"
Then turn around and get the new boxes as well...

well fine.....ordered 2 old fleet box sets, 2 reinforcments boxes, 4 nial blisters, and 4 tishat blisters. that will be MORE then enough to get me started, although may have to get some more tigaras to fill in the raid section....ah well get em later.

You are going to wind up with 6 Leshaths, probably more scouts than you will ever need. You can easily cut the sensor equipment off from the top fin of a couple Leshaths and you then have extra Teshlan/Tigaras. Also, if you ever plan to field even half of those ships, you'll need tons more fighters, although with what you are getting you won't be hurting in most normal sized battles.

As stated in an earlier post, I found that the old Vorlon Fleet box, plus four blisters of the new smaller transports, and one blister of fighters is much cheaper (about $40) than buying the new fleet box plus a number of ships to make the ship numbers equal.

yeah i realize i'll have a few extra scouts and not enough fighters if i were to field all the sharlins but this is just to get me started :) i'll have to get some more of the smaller vessels and a quite a few more fighters, at this point i just want to save myself the money on the big stuff while the old fleet boxes are still around. and thax for the tip on the vorlon fleet i'll probly pick up a few of those while im at it. later when i get into other fleets i'll just have to pay the higher price if old box sets can't be found anymore but figure between minbari/vorlon i'll have way more stuff then i really need to get started..... :)

so is anyone gonna slap me like a red headed stepchild for using the old troligan fig? i don't really care for the looks of the new one.... :)

thanx for the input guys.

Hope not. I'm using my two

Recently I bought a new shadow box. How I was suprised to find it was the old box with 2 scouts blisters added. All in all I got one shadow ship more and 2 fighter bases less. Which is a pity, as I already have enough shadow ships, but I lack fighters...

the old troligan is very ugly, but i'm using
my new one alongside the old one i have if
i need two troligans (which seldom happens).

So here in my group there is no problem with that.

I wouldn't. But then I wouldn't dare slap a ranger. :D

Actually, Lokai said that, I just truncated it all to save space. ;) I will probably get one of the new Troligans but I will not get rid of my old ones.
Regards,

The old box sets are generaly much better value than the new ones, and in most retail outlets that still carry them, are cheaper because they are the "old" box. As for the Troiligan, the old one is just as ugly as the new one, less cartoonish but still a damn ugly ship, I wouldn't think anybody would object to you using one.

The old boxed sets may be better value than the new ones in some cases, however, the new ones generally have much better balanced fleets in them and are far more playable "out of the box".

Maybe a true concern if you are just starting up, but for an old head, getting more of the old fleet boxes is a good thing. ;)

Between that and saying you just grabbed 2(two) fleet boxes of Mindbari, 2(two) Reinforcements boxes of Minbari,
Well, I just don't think saving money is something you usually have to worry about.

I sure don't have the kind of money to be so blase about buying $400 of Minis

(that said, I have just recently completed the purchasing of $900 worth of such though more than half is already painted and I got for 75Cents on the Dollar)

what can i say i don't mind spending money on my hobbies.....should i be spending that much money in one wack? probly not, but i can and it dosn't bother me that much and saving an extra $33 per box oveer the new box dosn't hurt any.....but i'll probly also be paying to have them painted as i would do a craptastic job and miniature games deserve more respect then that :)

looking to get some vorlons as well me thinx always liked playing them in b5wars.....although they look to be more balanced in ActA which is a good thing.....don't want to scare anyone off cus they can't beat x race with y race.

I used to, many moons ago at the first Mongoose Open Day I picked up the big 4 fleet boxes and some additional gubbins (including Tbolts), and thus my reputation as a dirty fighter robber was cemented.
