Here are the stats for my final MGT 3.2 run (250,000 UWPs generated). The numbers shown are the percentages of the worlds that had the UWP digit in the first columns.

I've gone over the code with a fine toothcomb, and as far as I can see there aren't any bugs in the UWP or tradecode calculations.

Here's a load of MGT 3.2 UWPs, up to hex 1000 (I think the hex location numbers are actually a bit screwy, but they don't really matter for these purposes).

The pair of numbers after the trade codes are the "BG" (belts and giants) numbers from the PBG block. Since MGT doesn't use multipliers, the P column has been omitted.

The last number on its own is the Temperature code of the world, as shown below:

Comparison between CT and MGT

Here I've implemented the MGT 3.2 rules as closely as possible (I decided in the end to use the Population TL DMs as shown in the MGT rules, so there isn't a +2 or +4 DM to TL for pop 9 or A worlds. Though I did assume that the +1 DM for gov 4 was erroneous and should have been for gov 5 - see the rules I used in the post above anyway).

The starport distribution is obviously different since they use different tables - there are less type As and more type Ds and Xs in the MGT rules.

The atmosphere distribution is broadly similar - the slight differences are due to the "maximum atmosphere is 2*Size" rule"... but that doesn't really make a huge difference (it does mean you don't get size 1 worlds with atm 6 at least... but they can still have atm 1 or 2, which is still an impossibility in the habitable zone).

The hydrographics is a bit different - in CT the peak is tighter around 5, but in MGT the peak is more spread out around 5 and 6. This I think has to be down to the fact that the only DM in MGT is a -4 if the atm is 0, whereas CT says to use DM-4 if the atm is 0,1,or A+ (and if the size is 1 or 0 then the hyd is 0 too). This changes the distribution of De, Ic and Fl worlds somewhat (and slightly changes the Ag, Po and Na results too since they're also hydro-based). The less stringent DMs in the MGT rules also means that there are 5% less hyd 0 worlds in the MGT rules than in the CT rules.

Pop, Gov, and Law are pretty much the same as CT, since there aren't any differences in how they're calculated.

Tech levels are different though - the key differences are in the pop column of the Tech Level DMs. MGT does not have CT's +1 if pop 5, and doesn't have CT's +2/+4 for pop 9/A. This pushes the peak of MGT's TLs down to 5-9, as opposed to CT's 7-A, and also means that the highest possible TL is reduced to H (for a world with A00045x-H). It also means you can get worlds like E6759B9-1 where you have billions of people living at TL 1 (and the atm is 7, so they're apparently also suffocating!), or C581ADD-5 where you have tens of billions living at TL 5 (and on a very dry world as well).


Trade codes: There are slight differences in Ag, Na, and Po between MGT and CT due to the different hydrographics distribution in MGT, and large differences in De, Ic, Fl, and Wa because of that.

There is a major difference in the Ht and Lt codes between CT and MGT however - 7% of the worlds in MGT have TL C+ (Ht) and 30% have TL 5- (Lt), but in CT 14% are Ht and 20% are Lt. This is no doubt due to the different pop DMs in the tech level table.


Discussion: Overall, the MGT system is similar to the CT one... too similar, in fact. It doesn't solve any of the problems inherent in CT - first, it doesn't change the objective issue of the broken physical stats (i.e. small worlds with breathable atmospheres). While the attempt to limit those by saying that the atmosphere is limited to Size*2 is valiant, it doesn't do anything to remove the problem - a size 1 world still can have atm 1 or 2, and size 2 world can still have up to atm 4, both of which are still impossibilities in the habitable zone (ditto for size 3 and 4).

The other objective issue is that of the population living on worlds on which they can't survive (i.e. minimum TL limits for certain atm types, like TL 4 societies living on atm C or 0 worlds). MGT doesn't handle this at all, and neither does CT, so it remains a problem.

There is also the more subjective issue of the population distribution (i.e. people living in large numbers on inhospitable worlds), which again is not handled at all by either MGT or CT. Again, while an attempt has been made in MGT to tie the starports are very loosely to population, this doesn't really go far enough.

So overall, the default MGT system unfortunately doesn't really solve any of the problems that the CT system had or add anything to them. While I don't think it actually makes those problems worse, you might as well have just stuck with the CT rules for the most part and just kept the MGT starport rules for what little the difference it makes.

Either way, there is still a lot of room for improvement in the worldgen system (i.e. all the problems remain unsolved) and I think it can certainly be made a lot better. Fortunately, I've come up with a bunch of proposals that should fix all of the objective problems with the CT and MGT worldgen systems (and tackle some of the subjective ones) without adding much complexity. I'll present those in my EDG Stats and UWPs post later today.

I don't like all the low TL worlds. My games tend to have a lot of TL 9-11 worlds and my trade ships tend to be built on TL 11-13 hulls. I never was a fan of seeding lots of low TL colonies. With fusion power and automation you shold be able to have a level 8-9 Tec base even on your colony, mineing, and outpost worlds.
 
The EDG run should hopefully fix that... (because there'll be TL limits based on the world's atms - lower TLs will be raised to those minimums for the society to survive).
 
I checked the MGT 250k run and got the following numbers:

Worlds with size 4-, atm 2-9 (impossible atmospheres): 66894 (26.75%)
Worlds with size 1 or 2, atm 1+ (impossible atmospheres): 23334 (9.33%)
Worlds with atm 0-3/A-C, pop 6+ (horrible atmospheres): 44942 (17.98%)

Unsurprisingly that's about the same as CT.

For starports, I got:

Worlds with Starport A, (Pop 6- and/or Tech 8- ): 12648 (5.06%)
Worlds with Starport B, (Pop 4- and/or Tech 6-): 20171 (8.07%)
Worlds with Starport C, (Pop 2- and/or Tech 3-): 10778 (4.3%)
Worlds with Starport D, (Pop 0 and/or Tech 3-): 12752 (5.10%)
Worlds with Starport X and Tech 9+ : 0 (0%)

So in total, 22.54% of the starports in MGT don't have sufficient tech or population to support them (by the definitions I've used here). It's better than CT, but still rather too many.

This is pretty much the issue I'd like to try and get some discussion on. I'd also like to do it without it being seen as a direct critique of the EDG worldgen. Can we do this ?

Well there's nothing stopping you from presenting your own ideas about how to fix the problem. Though it would be better in its own thread.
