Near Future Traveller

This is a thread about NEAR FUTURE Traveller TL 5-8 has been discussed as it is about pre Jump and pre M-Drive. So primitive stuff IS the topic. Are you sure you are in the right thread?
Since I started it yes, I am in the right thread. šŸ™

This is a thread about using the rules in HG(2022) to see what a TL7 to TL8 (and now to early TL9) with no gravitics and no fusion power plants may look like.

Stick to the thread, no primitive stuff, just what is in High Guard 2022.

Since you need gravitics to have a planetoid hull then there is a TL9 minimum... until the rules are changed anyway :)
I'd waive that for a planetoid station. The gravitic requirement makes sense if it's zooming around under high thrust, but parking a big rock in orbit and turning it into something passes the pub test.

I would go one step further and ignore the ban on non-gravitic hull for planetoids. I hope that in the update it goes away.

But until then it has to be a invocation of rule zero... :)

It exists.

The questions I'd have, is why acceleration capped to factor/three, and why gravitated drives are banned?

My theory is the primitive power grid.

Especially since primitive planetoid hulls are non gravitic.

You can't mount M-Drive or J-Drive on a primitive hull but can you carry them in a docking clamp while the other ship is using an M-Drive or J-Drive?

Good question.
One of the requirements of a jump drive hull is a network of cables to maintain the jump field.
Back in CT77 days if you built a non-starship hull then it was half price.

Then they introduced jump shuttles for SDBs in S:7 and the discount for a starship hull went away in LBB:81.

Fast forward to Mongoose, I would say a primitive hull lacks the jump cable network, so would need a jump shuttle with an extendable cable mesh.
