MRQ2 Races worth it?

I have always bought as much RQ in every version I could find, and still have most of it. But the Goose seems to be cranking them out pretty quick, and I just cant afford that many books.

So, is there enough in the Races book to justify buying it? Particularly as i dont allow Dragonewt PCs and have only ever had one duck PC in all the years I have played. It would be an easy skip, but I love trools. And it seems I need to get this one just to get the Troll cults.

It is already a bit annoying to have to get a book I may potentialy ever use a third of, but if there is not much different in the third I plan to use, then it is a total waste of cash.

Please do not take that as a bash of MRQ2. The Goose will get the same amount of cash from me, just a question of which books. And most of the rewrites do seem to add a good bit. So it is meant to be a serious question, not a veiled attempt to bash MRQ2.

Rurik, if you read this you know how I like trolls, is this a good buy just for them? Thanks for any reply.

Personal views will differ, but I felt there is enough in the book to justify buying it. Information about trolls, I feel, is better presented and made in RQII (e.g. char gen). The troll cults section is transformed. Still it is a tad expensive just to use 1/3 out if it.

I must admit to being a bit intimidated by the sheer speed of releases for the Gloranthan setting in RQII. I got the corebook on PDF and I'm slowly browsing through it - and generally finding it quite superior fantasy, which I am enjoying. But the Cults book would have to back it up, to feel like you could really get to grips with the cultural backdrop, and then there will be the Pavis adventure/intro book, and then the Races volumes too....!

Buy all that lot and you'll be truly committed to the setting - but at the expense of not trying out other settings? (I have Deus Vult and Merrie England, which are good, and I'd like the Vikings book too, and Clockwork and Chivalry and what about all the upcoming Eternal Champion stuff?!?!)

From the pdf preview, it looks like the Races Vol 1 is actually a compilation of splat books for Dragonewts, Ducks and Trolls respectively. I'd expect that the Elfs and Dwarfs will be covered in the next one, along with...well what other PC races are there?

Of course this doesn't mean that you have to use the book as a player resource. You could simply use this as a more involved creature compendium of sorts, and just have human PCs interacting with these cultures. In this case, it does become more useful, I'd expect.

I would love a book on the Agrimori and Baboons. Just never had much ineterest in Dragonewts or ducks.

Remeber, your Troll doesnt have to outrun the lion, you just have to outrun the duck beside you.

Thinking of Praxians reminds me I forgot Morocanth!

maybe we should ask for a "Tribes of Prax" book as a companion to "Pavis",
covering the "standard" beast riders (Bison, High Llama, Sable, Impala, Rhino, Zebra), the Morocanth and the more unusual minor tribes (Agimori, Baboons, Bolo Lizard Folk, Ostrich Riders, Cannibal Cult, Basmoli Berserkers)

Well the Agimori need to be dealt with in a bit more properly than that. The Praxian variety are culturally different from those in the West and the base Agimori on Pamaltea.

Presumably the Pure Horse Tribe should also be included.

Don't believe him - he's obviously a troll! :twisted:

Sorry, I don't have it yet, so I can't say with any certainty.

At 280 pages and the higher word count per page of the new books, it likely contains more material on trolls than the MRQ1 UZ book did, and the material should be a bit more along the lines of what an old school Gloranthaphile expects.

I too am pretty ambivalent about Ducks, and not likely to allow a Dragonewt player - but the Dragonewts still make good foes (or friends - nah, foes is better), especially in the second age, so I wouldn't think that the Dragonewt Section would be a total waste.

Perhaps it is time to branch out and use new things. But other than the new cult write up I wonder how much of even the Troll stuff is new.

I will have to leaf through one when they get it in the FLGS and see if there is anything I need. I do want the cult writeups, but it seems a steep price for them.

I second that. Incidentally, shouldn't the Pure Horse People be in Prax in the Second Age? They came with the EWF and were defeated and scarpered in 1250, iirc. I cite Nick Brooke: http://www.etyries.com/journeys/horses.htm

Yes, I'd forgotten them (too much third age thinking - I knew the Pol Joni didn't exist in the 2nd age, but forgot the Pentans had "come south")

Hi,

I can tell you that there was a major rewrite by yours truelly of the majority of the Troll homelands and cultural background to include all of the troll regions in Glorantha and to bring them into line for the Third Age background in Trollpak etc.

That is good to hear. At least it is not just a recycle of other things.
Indeed, the material in the Uz section of Races of Glorantha is mostly written from an EWF perspective, os even if most of the core information is much the same, it's all new text.

I got my copy yesterday, so I have not had a chance to completely read through it, but I did read through the Uz section, and I think it is worthwhile.

One significant change I noticed is that ALL Uz are now demoralized in direct sunlight, and they created game effects for Uzdo and Enlo intolerance to light. (Can't use any skills higher than perception skill, while in direct light; by spell or sun.)

Looking forward to reading the rest.

Really? I haven't got as far as the game mechanics, but the narrative section written by an EWF Orlanthi says that Uzko are not affected at all by sunlight, and can use Darksense at full effectiveness, but that Uzdo and Enlo are. Maybe he's been taken in by Uz propaganda.

Under the special rules section;

Sun Cursed: "As creatures of darkness, Uz suffer in the full radiance of Yelm, the Great Enemy. His light blisters their skin and causes heat rash, forcing most trolls to remain underground durring the day. Although the blistering does not cause any measurable damage, the pain is significant. This combined with the terrible presence of he who destroyed Wonderhome, causes all trolls to be Demoralised in direct sunlight, as per the Common Magic spell. It is because of this mythic weakness that trolls are usually only active on the surface at night."

Uzdo and Elno suffer an additional rule;

Light Blindness: "Whilst the acute light sensitivity of Enlo and Uzdo eyes allow them to see in their gloomy underground homes, it becomes a liability if exposed to bright daylingt on the surface. Unless the weather is heavily overcast, trollkin and great trolls outside during the day reduce all their skills to the value of the Perception skill. The same effect occurs if either species of Uz is exposed to bright lights from any source, even underground."
