monkey magic rpg

Seems that we are not the only ones in the world who think Monkey! is prime RPG fodder

Irrepressable...

Ok, this Monkey thread just won't die. I accept that.

Given that it won't go away, can you perhaps tell those of us outside the UK just what the heck MONKEY is?

What about it is special?
Why would it make a good RPG?
What about MONKEY as an RPG would make me, an outsider as it were, want to buy this instead of <insert other RPG based on something I've actually heard of before>.

Please be serious in your answers. Or as serious as you can be given the nature of this topic. :P

Monkey was a Japanesse television series based on the classic oriental story 'Journey to the West', itself a comedy.

Essentially it features three oriental spirits, and a Tripiaka, a monk, who journey to the west to deliver some scrolls, and have some very bizarre and typically RPG adventures along the way. See Tripiaka is the perfect soul, and monkey and his friends are exiles from heaven seeking a way back in.

But with some seriously funny slapstick... The US seems to be the only place where Monkey is not actually known.

More importantly however Monkey (the book more than the TV series) is possibly the widest known mythical figure of China (they have a museum to him there), and given the adventures they undertake on route, just about every element of chinesse mythology comes in (from Jade Emperor right through).

Why would it make a good game, because a) theres plenty of fighting b) lots of weird monsters c) Funky magic (like Monkeys pink flying cloud) d) its not too serious (unlike Samurai games).

Also you could tie in the water margin (renegade samurai superhero powered fighters against an opressive regime) simply by swapping Monkeys staff and sideburns for a sword...

And of course no one has really ever touched on a non-japanesse non-occidental setting. Theres more to the East than dullard Samurai and Sneaky Ninja (though they do get a look in during the series).

another selling point is every other roleplaying game about the east is serious and very japanese. It is the starting place for the comic chinese/hongkong movies including jackie chan.Another thread here asks for something wild and unique well monkey is that.

So what would the characters be? Monks out wandering? Monkey, or other animal god types who are trying to get back into heaven? And if the players are gods, what limits them?

What classes would there be? How would it be diferent from other oriental adventures (other than stressing Chinese vs. Japanese background)?

Also, how would this fit into a group setting? I can see it as a solo adventure, where one guy plays the monk and the rest are GM controlled...

I can see how this could make for a good comedy cartoon, but I just don't get how it would work as an RPG. Could you explain that aspect more?

The oriental view of these gods is not as being omnipotent and perfect. Infact Monkey and Co in the series are largely quite the oppersite, more like the heroes of mythology.

Given the nature of D20 and the fact that most fantasy games the players characters are like gods to the average bloke in the street, why not offer the chance to play one of the more minor spirits (Horse, Cow, Raven)...

As for character classes, well theres a warrior, Mage, Monk, Clerics, Sorceerers, Thieves, Assassins, other spirit warriors... I think we can see where this is going... The main difference is that many of those in the series have a bit of magic in them (Slaine also has this)... The idea, as mentioned before, is not to actually just have Monkey, but a mythological game of the orient (like D&D essentially is just Lord of the Rings)

I'd see it the other way, the monk is more likely GM controlled (its a perfect being remember, a Buddha) where as the others are largely drunkards, fools and braggarts (your average pcs). Me, I'd turn all four over to the players, and let them roleplay - after all thats what its about.

Just because its called Monkey, doesn't mean that YOU are playing the central characters (see all licenced games for this - rather you are playing in the world they inhabit). In Judge Dredd you don't actually play Dredd - and thank god, because I play in a Buffy game....

or alternatively look through these to see why something that not just samurai is so desperately needed as

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/tg/browse/-/275526/ref=br_dp_bl/202-1468888-8291832

And best not forget the 50 odd episodes of the series that were made... so theres plenty of room for ideas...

Furthermore Martial Arts movies? Monkey certainly falls into that catagory (except maybe for weapons... a rake).
