An earlier topic asked about the relationship between MGT and T5, but the topic derailed, and anyway I thought it was time for a wider picture. So, hopefully, this topic will stay more focused.
It's always nice to have compatibility, backwards or otherwise, and I think MGT will benefit from having CT and T5 compatibility. So to talk about what MGT is, I'll explain how I think it relates to other versions.
For those who might not know, Mongoose Traveller is its own game, a creation of Mongoose, with original content, inspiration from CT, and some borrowing from T5. It uses its own mechanics.
The following thoughts are my opinions.
It looks like Classic Traveller and MegaTraveller characters can more or less be used as-is in Mongoose Traveller. Perhaps MT character skill levels range a little high; I'm not sure. Conversely, you can take MGT characters directly into any CT setting, and play any of those old adventures. T5's characters can also be used in MGT, if you first convert skill levels (and it looks to be straightforward).
Weapons and equipment are largely importable from CT and MT, if you first convert damage over to MGT. The same goes for weapons and equipment created using T5.
The small starships from CT will work as-is in MGT, though ships like CT's Mercenary Cruiser could get an MGT facelift (to its advantage). Since MGT uses T5's drive tables, and an abbreviation of the bridge and computer rules, T5 starships can also be used, although the owner of a T5 starship may want to purchase MGT software for his ship's computer.
