Case 1 - Robots and artificial intelligence.

Case 2 - Artificial limb replacements.

Probably more, and I'm sure more will come to me.

Yes but the point is just because its beyond out technology doesnt make it sci fi if its not at least got some founding in real science. Perhaps a better way of putting my original point would be to say that Star Wars isn't SERIOUS Sci-fi.

But then as I've said before the only TV show 'sci-fi' I ever felt came close to 'serious sci-fi' was B5 and that has some really rediculous ideas itself (organic ships being one of the real biggies... where exacly is the advantage of having an organic SPACESHIP. Organic CPU systems maybe but making a Warship out of soft squishy temperature vulnerable material as opposed to nice reflective tough armour is a little silly when you think about it ;))

That's better because it isn't serious, in that it's a space opera. It's still a sci-fi film though.

Who says organic = soft and squishy? What about TREES, who would sail across an ocean on one of them?!

What about Lorien. He makes Star Wars and the force look totally believable and realistic!!!

Lorien is cool - he'd be handy to have around if u needed to build a ship in a bottle if your life depended on it lol.
He looks kinda like the Drazi being tortured with Sheridan, the Drakh dude in the Centauri palace, Jack the Ripper, and a soul hunter in River Of Souls too!

Same actor, from what I can remember - Wayne Alexander
B5 - good at recycling lol

Well like I said B5 is hardly the worlds most serious sci fi either. But at least they had realistic space flight with proper momentum.

I happened to see Murder She Wrote the other day, and guess who was on it... the rabbi that came to visit Ivanona. LOL! It's spreading cross-show!

Except for whenever a White Star does a total backward somersault and all the crew, not wearing seatbelts i might add, aren't thrown all over the show from the inertia

That was I believe a fine example of sarcasm on burger's part ;)

and sebastian WAS jack the ripper so not really surprising in that case :P

Still he was an amusing character (in the show, Im not saying that I'm fan of victorian psychopaths or anything).

Artificial gravity dude. If you can do that you can directly counter just about all inertial effects. But that in itself is getting a bit more away from the science and more toward the fiction end of the spectrum.... All that said B5 is actually pretty good for the science for HUMAN technology. Races like the Minbari who are at least 1000 years older can get away with a bit more fantastical stuff.

And yes I know you could argue the same for the StarWars universe but this whole conversation should illustrate nicely my point about how things always get a bit silly as soon as you try to justify sci fi tech for any show/movie/book etc. :P

My overall point is Star Wars just FEELS much less heavy scifiish and more just 'ooooh lasers, pretty!' sci fi ish ;)

LOL... couldn't stand watching it for more than 10 minutes. And after playing Jessica Fletcher in a LARP at Gaelcon, I'll never watch it again.
