modern - well 80's..

Is there any chance that VAS can be brought into a more modern setting like the 80's??
With all the focus on the 25th anniversary of the Falklands it would be interesting to send a tiny task force off on the gaming table.
Harriers and exocets....
You could probably get a good size portion of the falklands on a table top in 1:6000.

I just wondered if anyone had tweaked around with it for more modern ships??

regards

It can work for moderns in its current format as long as you stick to shorter ranged weapons and tweak the ground scale (e.g. 1" to 1 mautical mile which would give an Exocet a range of 25"). It gets tricker with longer legged weapons such as Harpoon (60-70") and downright silly with some of the bigger Russian missiles (300"+). I'm currently working on a few period variants and Modern (ish) is on the "to do" list unless someone bags it first :) Small conflicts such as the Falklands and the Indonesian Confrontation are the "target" campaigns.

Yeah, US vs Russia would suck, but modern falklands type conventional conflict would be fine. Aircraft would be hugely important though and would have the ability and stand off firepower to kill ships. You may also have to represent aircraft as individual craft and not flights.

I can pretty much guarantee if modern rules appeared thwy would get played at my club at least once.

I got a bunch of the aircraft and 4 ships in 1/600 scale. For fleet battles I'll get the Navwar Brit and Argentine packs for the period, £9.00 for each.

Air in VaS are currently one shot items. Treat the big missiles of this type as a plane, with a fast move.

You could even buy them as a stand off purchase where you bring them in from the sides table edge, fly to target attack once after relevant defences like current VaS land based air.

Or if a ship on table has them....launch as per aircraft rather than as a 'shot' - its a bit akin to torps, a bit akin to air.

Or are these completely off base?

I've started a Word file. More acollection of ideas than rules at the moment. If anyone wants to see them drop me a PM with your email address.

It was small conflicts I was interested in - running Polaris subs around the arctic circle or the US taking on the Soviets was a bit large scale for me.

The Falklands looks ideal with a tiny land mass and loads of ship action - I guess if you're gaming you would see a lot more action than reality.

Oh well, good to hear someone knowledgable is looking at it, when I get my WWII stuff finished and painted I know what I be looking at.

I'd ask for the word file, but to honest I am short of time to play test and I know next to nothing about naval stuff! So not a lot of use...
Sorry

Nothing recently I'm afraid. OOB and WW1, plus some other projects have got in the way of me thinking about this too much.

I'd be very interested in seeing a VaS Falklands War variant. I did try with Harpoon which I found slow to play and Shipwreck, which was too abstract for my taste. To be fair though, I didn't really persevere with either of them, so I may be doing them both an injustice. Something that finds that mid-ground between the detail of Harpoon & the simplicity of Shipwreck could be the "ideal" ruleset. Anyone any thoughts on the merits or otherwise of the above rules (or any alternatives)?

They are pretty close to being done. I need some time to make a few formal amendments to some of the files. The development team have done a great job so far. Once I've amended the files we'll take a little while to read through and (hopefully) spot the little mistakes that are probably there and then we'll send to MGP for them to mull over.

No timescales yet I'm afraid as "real life" is taking a heavy toll on my spare time at the moment, but I'm hoping to get the final draft to MGP in a couiple of months or less.

oooo, an official one :D

i'd be honoured to come upto bristol and play test if you like ;).
hope real life gets sorted out soon.

Yeah, me too. Some of the real life issues are actualy a lot of fun (hey, I get to play warships a t 1:1 scale :D ). Some however are not so pleasant :(
