Magnetic base adapters

Mongoose
While tooling around looking at other Space minis I stumbled on this site that sells magnetic adapters for the bases. I remember the post about the clasp type but thought this might be interesting to others as well.

They also do angled adapters:

The only issue I have had with them is sometimes the "spigot" at the end snaps off. Ironically this has only ever happened to my G'Quans (all 3 of them), and it doesn't seem to be the weight since my Bin'Taks and Ka'Bin'Tak are don't suffer from this problem.

I guess my G'Quans just want to kill themselves before ending up on the table! ;)

Regards,

Dave

it's no worse than your acta plastic stenm snapping, and is infinately more repairable though ;-)

Maybe its the Gquans telling you that they are embarressed to be on a table with a real ship.

They also don't show on their site but they've slightly redesigned them. The barrel part that connects to the base stem is now in two pieces. It seems the old single piece long version was too difficult to cast well. So they cut them in half and put a notch in the side so they can be glued together to make the long piece. From what I can see it shouldn't effect their strength any. You can check it out in this You Tube video review.

it's funny because it's true

No, no, no - the G'Quan was fixed in P&P!

Oh, hold on a minute.... no it wasn't! ;)

Back on topic though (as there's no need for another G'Quan thread) the ninja magic adaptors are well worth the investment!

Maybe we should sticky this on the Modeling forum or something so I dont keep adding stuff thats already known. :o

Plus, can we do a sticky for sales or trades? I think that would be handy so I dont have to search for all things 'sellable'

thanks

I've moved it to the Modelling forum, whilst leaving it still visible in the ACTA forum.

I don't know if I can sticky it as well as doing that, but it should at least increase the visibility.

Every time i see you posting here LBH I rush to see your painted minis.

Sadly hasn't quite got cold enough yet in the lower planes.

Thanks for the link. Helped to visualise this.

I am planning to get some of these... some of the ships I have bought were damaged in transit (braking stands mostly), also want to use something small to connect to the ships due to better transport. :)

Question about the bases: any you may recommend? Would you use the general ones from ACTA or buy new ones? Which ones then?

Thanks for all the advice.

I've been quite happy with the ball and socket flying bases supplied with ACTA models, although I seem to be in a minority here. ;) The ball needs to be filed or sanded slightly if you want the model to be able to pivot, which is the whole idea of these bases, but be careful not to overdo it or the model will always tilt even when you don't want it to!

Also, the socket won't fit onto some models, e.g. between the fins of a Sharlin or the spines of a Shadow Scout, so in these cases I had to just glue the stem straight in. But the Sharlin lies on its side and the Shadow Scout isn't all that big, so with careful packing they have survived transport - and if they did get damaged, it wasn't the stand. :) (The little antenna on the front of the Sharlin is fragile, and the Scout's outer spines occasionally get knocked off.)

I kind of like those too... :) However some of them too did brake and I also do not have enough of those to refit my whose fleet.

Are there any sources which sell these Mongoose ball and socket stands?

If not, I will be going for the generic domed ones as they appear to be the ones which are most likely to find in online stores in Europe (if there are any good online stores for supplements in UK, let me know!). And I will be connecting them to the magnetic adapters.

One question though: will they hold also on a Drazi or a Centauri ships - those with a very thin lower ending? I suppose so but wanted to ask if anyone has more experience.

Iron Wind might still sell them. Theyre still listed on their site.

It might also be worth testing out a packet of these magnetic flight stands, haven't tried them myself but they should be strong enough for all the smaller ships at the very least ( I use rare earth magnets on Skytrex WW1 fighters which are of similar mass, and also on one large bomber type which is easily as heavy as the Drazi Stormfalcons).
