Life support & maintance without access to a starport

If you're doing a lost-in-space game (Stargate Universe or Battlestar Galactica) or an exploration game (Star Trek: Enterprise), it doesn't allow for monthly stops into an appropriate facility to recharge life support or perform maintenance.

From my read, life support and monthly maintenance are the two items that cannot be done without access to an appropriate starport. Are there was around these costs? I know you can have a biosphere to reduce (or eliminate entirely) the cost of life support, but there is no listed negative for what happens if you don't pay for life support. if you skip maintance the ship might take a critical hit, so there is a mechanical downside for not doing it.

I guess you could not do maintenance and just fix the crit each month when it gets to that point, but that's going to take a lot of time, cash, and spare parts. And isn't in the spirit of the above mentioned IPs.

Monthly maintenance doesn't need a starport except for 1/year.

Repairs and Maintenance: A ship needs maintenance, which costs 0.1% of the total purchase price of the ship per year. Maintenance should be carried out each month (divide the year’s maintenance cost by 12 to find the monthly cost. Once per year this should be performed at a shipyard.

Since the cost is fixed, you could in theory buy spares and things in advance, and just store them in the ship. That would take up space, but would cut down the need for a starport (or wherever you get the things for maintenance) to only 1/year.

Likewise, additional food, water, oxygen, and whatever else the life support costs include could be carried as cargo as well.

The only thing needed is to determine just how much space these things require.

Beltstrike has rules for carrying life support and, I think, rules for maintenance tasks to use them. Belters don't make port call very often.

I'll see if I can get my hands on a copy, thanks!
