Laser Power Packs

How much does just the power pack weight?
interesting, I didn't realize they didn't list a weight until you pointed it out.

In CT they are listed as;

Laser Rifle; 4kg
Laser Carbine: 3kg

On a related note Magazine weights in general are missing.
Yep, I didn't even notice that. But then weren't they also missing from the 1st ed MGT Core Rule Book as well?

Also, p.121 says:

As the Tech Level increases, power packs gradually become integrated into the weapons themselves.

Yet nothing I can find in the tables or in the weapon descriptions themselves indicates which versions have external power packs and which has integrated ones.

This crops up now and again, and I would direct you to page 92, Encumbrance.

Basically, encumbrance is not something we really want to track - it is not very interesting and no one really cares whether you are carrying one magazine or two. You want to get on with the adventure.

So, instead, we have put guidelines to limit the power gaming aspect and leave everything else to the referee - which is where the decisions should lie.

So, by all means, load up with half a dozen magazines in your backpack and get on with the adventure. If you want to carry around three dozen and have instant access to all of them, the referee is within his rights to step in.

Ok then I can live with some increment of the total wight of my choosing if the question comes up...

Or, Fallout4 has arrived in my house and we all know Ammo is weightless.... 8-)

Without the hassle of really thick heavy duty cabling, integral battery packs would eliminate that weight and awkwardness.

Without listing the weights, there is nothing for the GM to make a decision from. Omitting encumbrance rules and leaving it to the GM is one thing; leaving out the weights of things just leaves the GM uninformed and poorly equipped to make a decision.

Regardless, some of this stuff is going to be cargo at some point, and, as such, needs a weight.

Actually it isn't a real big problem, as there is 35 years of Traveller sitting on top of the Mongoose edition I always can pull a number from there.

Yes, true. However it annoys me if I need to do this, I like my rules self contained. Also it does not help those referees and players who do not have, or desire to purchase, the other Traveller versions.

While this is a true statement, it makes me sad ever time I see it in the Play Test. Why do we want to produce rules that are incomplete or lacking information that should be there?

I hope Mongoose is not just doing this for the few old fans who have access to the 35 years of old stuff. I hope they are looking to expand the Traveller fan base with new players and GMs. Folks who should be able to expect a complete game.

Once a product is out and we realize something was missed, then this answer is the right one. But this product is still in development, so I would suggest we not ignore a clearly pointed out missing element.

From Matt's answer it's pretty clear to me that weights (mass?) for all the stuff that has been missing all these years from MgT aren't going to appear in this ed.

I see where Mongoose are coming from I just don't agree with leaving it up to the GM who, with everything else s/he is doing will likely ignore it.

With the tools that Mongoose's partner RPGsuite.com are producing, the ease of tracking all this crap is made transparent to GMs and players alike and the effects of carrying too much can be rolled into the game. The software can do it behind the scenes. The printed rules need to lay it out so the GM/players can see how to get the best from their characters.

I get that not everyone will buy the aids from RPGsuite.com, I haven't yet seen projected pricing for the tools on RPGsuite.com, perhaps they'll be given away free with the game?

For some GMs (like me!) who want to tweak the sh!t out of stuff, the RPGsuite.com software will likely not allow that and be of little use but I am pretty sure that the tweakers are in the minority. I am still likely to buy the stuff but that's a different matter...

But let me not get away from my point: if you can track whats carried easily with the goodies from RPGsuite.com why not include the info for each and every thing? It's not gonna add any work for GMs or players, it will make players think about what they carry and perhaps help them focus on role playing?
