Kull DIY project (CC & suggestion welcomed)

Boneguard

Mongoose
Well while hoping and awaiting for MP to do a Kull rpg -or a Kull supplement for Conan- I'm going to try to give it a shot and do a little DIY supplement for it.

In order to keep it simple i,ll focus on 2 areas: Classes and Racial template.

Class-wise:
-I will make the Brigand, Gladiator and healer more streamline -martial disciple doesn't seem to fit though.
-I will modify/update the Noble a bit to take into account the new culture.
-I will modifier/update the borderer class for more racially specific bonus too.

Racial wise There would be 7 races:
-Atlantean
- Civilised sub-template
-Pict
-Lemurian
-The people of Mu
-The people of Kaa-u
-The people of the 7 kingdoms (Thurian)
- Zarfhaana sub-template
- Grondar sub-template

-Thulean

NPC Template:
- Snake-man
- The elder Race
- Non-Thurian form the mysterious Eastern Continent
- The primitive prehuman refered to in the Hyborian Age.
- The Black people from Demascar and Rikos
- The beast-man of Atlantis
- Intelligent sub-template

As you can see I'm planning to use the Official Kull stories, the Hyborian Age chronology, The Carter stories as well as the Marvel Comic "non-canon" element to make it a bit more complete.

Any comment or suggestion at this point?

Edit:
the 2nd phase will be a list of NPCs.
- Kull (Barbarian/pirate/brigand/gladiator/soldier/noble)
- Brule (Barbarian/borderer)
- Ka-nu (Barbarian/Scholar/noble)
- Tu (Scholar)
- Thulsa Doom (Scholar)
- Kaanuub (Noble)
- Rinondo (Tempter/scholar)
- Kelkor (Barbarian/soldier)
- Kuthulos (Scholar/commoner)
- Gonar (Barbarian/scholar)
- Om-ra (Barbarian/noble) -I might use the original name of Am-ra

This looks like fun! :-)

BTW, where is Thuzun Thune on that list of NPCs... ?

- thulsa

It is fun, it's not obvious since sometime I'm working blind-ish, but slowly I'll get there.

For the NPC list I try to stick to an intial short list as oppose to all of the named character...and IIRC Thuzun Thune had a run in with Brule.

Later on I might expend my list with other characters -minor or otherwise.

A bit slower then expected but hey, when working full time and being a full time dad it is to be expected.

On another note I'm testing the water here for 2 potential ideas:

1) Bard class: Should they be included?
Or does a Tempter/scholar path sufficient and better. If I do the bard class, Should I do Core or Prestige Class?

2) Publication: Would you be willing to buy it?
I just discovered Lulu.com and I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to publish this as a Small independant suppplement for MP Conan RPG or not.
- I understand it would be low market, but would there be any interest for it?
- If published, would class modification or new one; new/modified racial template and core NPC be sufficient or would you like more material -for exemple a map and some description of the Countries- if so what would you like to see.

This one is specifically For the MP staff: From your standpoint, would this constitute a breach of your copyright? I would put in a disclaimer and giving you due credit -as well as adding WOTC OGL Licence- but I want to check first if there would be any potenital legal problem with this idea.

CPI will probably send you a cease and desist letter if you publish it. They are not even averse to going to court over vague and sketchy claims, much less something as blatant as an unlicensed Kull supplement.

CPI???

Well I'm still looking at the possibilities here, and i have nothing definite yet. I might just shared it with people for free too.

I would called it a minstrel, not a Bard and if so make it a Class, his abilities are based on entertainment and charming the crowd, or moral in battle like big Kettle Drums booming over the battlefield!
Music is his power and entertainment also whether Oratory or Acrobatic, theatre and wandering so his special abilities would evolve around these things!

That will be somthing to explore. A bit more work, but worth it.

Conan Properties International. They own the trademarks on all the Robert E Howard characters and are somewhat litigious in going after people they see as infringing on those trademarks.

Yeah...I can see that as being problematic.

Well that king of illustrate why I asked first, better be safe then sorry.

There is some controversy as to what they own, though, as much of REH's work, including his Conan stories, have lapsed into Public Domain. Check out the book store--this is why you can find republished Howard works not sanctioned by CPI.

What racial features are you gonna use for Mu anmd Lemurian People? It could be interesting to apply that in my own games.

For The People of Mu, not too sure yet, I,ve started with the class since I figured it would be a bit easier to do some minor conversion.

The Lemurian people I will probably use the Lemurian of the East from the Ruins of Hyboria sourcebook as a template and adjust it.

I have read only a little of Kull. Any cultural data about Lemuria and Mu? Apart from the occultist texts of MMe Blavatsky and similars, I mean.

None really. There's a brief mention of mercenaries in the first short stories, but other then that nothnig definate.

For the most part, I have a lot of leeway in detailling the cultural aspect of most race.

Currently all I have is Acrobat reader. I'm considering (converting what I have) doing this on PDF. so my question for those who owns it.

If I want to put in images and a map (from ProFantasy world builder) is the Acrobat standard suite is enough or do I need to get the pro version?

Boneguard, IF you go the Adobe route then the standard should be sufficient for creating a simple book with added in images.

All PDF writers are capable of creating booklets with embedded images. The pro versions are for creating form-fillable documents, embedded slideshows, and other things that 90% of us do not use. Not to mention, the true power of Acrobat Pro is not unleashed unless you're using other advanced programs like InDesign.

If you are using Windows, a cheaper (ie free) alternative for you to try out is CutePDF. Back in my Windows days, that was one of the better free ones I could find.

Other than that, just be careful what fonts you use to create your pdf files with. Some of the system ones, as well as freeware ones, do not allow for embedding into pdf files.

Well that,s a good thing to know. I'll look into it.

More then likely I'll be using Time Roman or Arial. It's common enough and does the job well enough.

I'll be working a new Thurian Map based on Howard stuff. Carter's and Marvel's maps just doesn't do it for me and they are missing some elelments. and this one is pretty good, but again I'm not fully satisfied of the Nations layout.

Still looking into those idea:

Minstrel idea:
1: Bonus Feat at 2nd and higher (like with Nomad or Borderer), Feats like Acrobatic, Agile, Carouser, Dabbler*, Diligent, Improved Initiative, Investigator, Iron Will, Knowledgeable, Negotiator, Persuasive and skill focus.

2: Gets Performer at 1st level as free feat?

3: in Kull world alittle information on the Gods, ie Valka, etc, I not know much of Kull's world, but be nice to find out!

Because as a new class, I'm hoping to make it well balanced and make it differnet enough from the basic OGL/3rd ed bard to have some flavour.

So looking at my Bestiary/Secret of Skelos book I came up with those basic stuff for stats (I will compile later)

Minstrel:
HD: d6
BAB: Poor (Start at 0 +1/level)
DODGE: Good (Start at 0 +1/level)
PARRY: Poor (Start at 0 +1/2(3)levels)
MAB: Good (Start at 0 +1/2levels)
FORT: Poor (Start at 0 +1/3 levels)
REF: Good (Start at 2 +1/2 levels)
WILL: Good (Start at 2 +1/2 levels)
SKILL: 6+Int mod

Why: I'm trying to go for a character that lives more by his wit them his sword. As a musician Dexterity and Charisma are very important -other mental ability and constitution comes in second place-ish-, thus the reason why he is better at dodging and have better Reflex and Will save. His MAB is as high as a scholar, because due to their education, if they decide to Dabble with the Art they are very good at it.

In essence, stats wise he is close to the temptress (aside from the starting skill and the MAB). But the esence of the character would be different. The Minstrel would have access to all simple and all 1 handed martial weapon, I'm debating between light or medium armour (no shield) for protection. Knowledge, performing and oratory skill would be his main focus.

Thought? Comment?

Here what I have on the minstrel (let me know what you think(my comment afterward)):

MINSTREL

Adventures: Minstrels are entertainers. They travel around either together in roaming band of musician or as part of a party to sing their praise or boost morale.

Characteristic: A minstrel will be using their brain and their songs to achieve their goal. With the right word they can influence nation –raising them or bringing them down. They are the true embodiment of the old saying: The pen is mightier then the sword. In a group, they will mainly be in charge of morale and entertainment. They are usually also pretty good for first contact situation if you want to avoid conflict.

Religion: Minstrel usually follows the religion of their land. They tend to favor god that focus on arts or knowledge.

Background: Most minstrel are from urban setting. Revolving around royal court or taverns. Some will be travelling from place to place, entertaining and bringing news of the outside world to cities and villages.

GAME RULE INFORMATION

Abilities: Dexterity and Charisma are essential for the minstrel in order to entertain others. They are agile with their fingers, feet and their tongues and have a quick-wit to them. Wisdom and constitution can also be useful to avoid social faux-pas and being able to entertain people for hours and hours.

All of the following are class feature of the minstrel

Weapon and armour proficiency: A minstrel is proficient with all simple weapons with all one-handed martial weapons and light armour. Note that armour check penalty for wearing medium or heavy weapon apply to Balance, Climb, Excape Artist, Hide, jump, Move Silently, sleight of hand and tumble skills. Also, Swin checks suffers a -1 penalty for every five pounds of armour and equipment the minstrel carries.

Performer: At 1st level the minstrel automatically gain the Performer as a bonus feat.

Inspiring song: Through singing or other form of proper performance, the Minstrel can inspire, at first level, others to go surpass themselves. Any allies who can witness the performance will receive a +1 morale bonus to all attack and saving throw rolls. This bonus increases at every 4th level gained.

Bonus feat: at 2nd level and every 4th level gained, the minstrel gains a bonus feat from the following list: Acrobatics, Agile, Alertness, Carouser, Dabbler, Deceiver, Deft hand, Dodge, Improved initiative, Investigator, Iron will, Knowledgeable, Lightning reflex, Negotiator, persuasive, Skill focus.

Endurance: At 2nd level the Minstrel gains endurance as a bonus feat.

Influence others: Once per day a 3rd level –this increases every 4th level gained- Minstrel can influence the mood of others within 100” through performance or rhetoric. With this ability the Minstrel can mimic the effect of the spells domination or (mass) hypnotic suggestion.

Mobility: At 4th level, the Minstrel gains a +4 bonus to his Dodge Defense against attacks of opportunity when he moves out of or within a threatened area. If he already has Mobility from other source, he gains improved mobility (see below). Note that mobility does not apply if mounted.

Uncanny dodge: At 6th level, the Minstrel can use his dodge defense when caught flat-footed or when struck by an invisible attacker. If he already has uncanny dodge from another source, he gains improved uncanny dodge (see below) instead.

Improved uncanny dodge: At 8th level the Minstrel can no longer be flanked, except by a character with at least four more levels in thief or pirate than he has in barbarian.

Improved mobility: At 10th level the minstrel never provokes attacks of opportunity so long as he moves at least 10 feet during that combat round. If he already gained improved mobility from another source, he gains greater mobility (see below). This does not apply if mounted.

Greater mobility: at 16th level the minstrel can move up to his normal speed as part of a full attack action rather than merely taking a 5 foot step. He may move and attack in any order. This does not apply if mounted or if wearing heavy armour.

Comment:
As I said I wanted to go for an entertainer (music oratory feat of skills) and have him to be low key for combat. However since I was seeing him as a agile character it's the reason why he had the mobility/dodge improvement.

The rest of his ability are performance, orientated as much as possible.

I could also see him play a spy role if needed.
