JMS used a lot of stuff like this... Native American, African influences. In fact when someone accused him of ripping of Star Trek etc, he'd always point to how ST originally stole it from history!

Well I cannot think of any writer, who has never got anything from history. In the end, a writer does get his material from his/experiences and history.
