Is it done?

Gah, I know they got burned by the last film, but they did two things wrong in the last film:

1) They adapted the world and story to fit Hollywood.

2) They put Stallone in the film. Stallone was too big a name, and couldn't do the one simple task of keeping his bloody helmet on.

Anyway, moving on... if they cut the budget too much on the new films, they are guaranteeing flops. They don't need big name actors for most of the roles, but they need the right body and chin to play Dredd, and if they need to, have someone else do the voice.

I still have hopes that they will be good... fingers crossed.

I am really waiting for the 2nd edition of Dredd. I wonder if it will be a complete rulebook like Conan or if it still need another book for most of the rules (like the current version). Now that Megazine has finally beached to Finland I noticed that the feeling of the comics was very much more "adult oriented". I don't mean that it was all about sex etc. but it was more HC than previous Dredd comics just like what I intended to do with my Dredd game, if it ever gets off the ground.

About the new movies, I was really disappointed about the first one even when I didn't expect a lot (although I had waited for it for a long time) so the new ones can't be much worse. If you have seen the Starship troopers 2 (I know, it was not too good either) but the captain, IIRC that was found from the fort would be an excellent actor for Dredd. He has certain authority in him, he has a proper physique (sp?) etc. and is not too big star (I don't even remember his name at the moment but he was in the first season of 24 too).

That movie was horrible. Even worst than the Judge Dredd movie. I actually bought the movie. The costumes I thought were excellent, and I loved the look of the motorcycles.

But Starship Troopers 2? I wouldnt watch that movie again if you paid me.

I hated what they did to the Lawmaster in the film personally. They moved like normal bikes... which of course is all they were. What I would like to see is a custom made bike with the wide tires. Yes, the handling would be poor, but they would be sturdy, and with a good film crew they could be made to look as agile as they are in 2000AD. Of course, I would then love to get my hands on one of the bikes...

I love the Judge Dredd d20 game. I saw the movie and borrowed about a dozen comics from friends before buying the game. Afterward, I had to have the game. I have purchased every product for it. I even bought the 2 recent issues of Signs & Portents that have an adventure. I don't use the sourcebooks for the game (at least, I haven't yet), but I get them and read them for enjoyment.

But I don't think I will make a transition to a new edition. One of the strengths of the game for me is that it is d20. It takes a rules set for sword & sorcery fantasy RPGing and elegantly transforms it into a post-apocalyptic sci-fi RPG. The best thing Mongoose can do is to print more modules for Judge Dredd d20. I would ertainly keep buying them and other sourcebooks as a happy consequence.

I remmeber reading on the Judge Dredd RPG website words to the effect of "an unsupported game is a dead game." I think the best way to keep the game alive is to get it played. The best way to get it played is to publish adventures. I have enough trouble convincing my gropup to play it as a d20 game--I don't think a revision is going to help. Even if it stays d20 or OGL, I believe it will be significantly different to have a steep learning curve and a lack of portability to the curent game.

So, here's a vote for sticking with the current, winning plan. Otherwise, I'll likely consider Judge Dredd a closed universe. Since I've got 4 adventures yet to run, it will be enough to keep me busy indefinitely.

Ah, here is where we disagree. The one and only reason I don't currently run Judge Dredd is because it is d20. If they come out with a Judge Dredd 2.0, chances (and hopefully) it is going to be OGL. It would still be d20 like, but at least all the damn rules would be in the one book. So people who play D&D would be able to get into it fairly quickly. Mind you this is a guess, but I can't imagine Mongoose coming up with their own completely new system. So, to sum up what I think....OGL GOOD, D20 BAD.
