What TV or movies would you recommend to get inspired for Traveller? Firefly and Star Trek seem obvious. Any others?

EDIT: The Expanse & Guardians of the Galaxy :D

Alien (1979): Traveller analogues include Death Station and Chamax Plague.

Bladerunner (1982): For urban scenes and dystopian environments. One of the images of a Zhodani urban scene in Aliens of Charted Space, Vol. 1 was reminiscent of this film.

Aliens (1986): The military action of the Colonial Marines are inspiring for any TL9-11 mercenary campaign.

Babylon 5 (1994–1998): Humans and aliens trying to get along... and often failing to do so. Capital ship battles, diplomacy, interstellar travel. What's not to like?!

The Expanse (2015–): Great hard sci-fi treatment with a well-developed corps of characters, reminiscent of any Traveller starship crew.

I can't BELIEVE I didn't mention the Expanse in my OP. Best sci-fi in the last 20 years* in any medium. (Fight me)

The Alien movies (first two) are good ideas. I never watched B5 though.

Bladerunner is probably a good example of certain types of worlds, but I'm not sure if it translates well to a party of PCs. I have to confess I am an outlier among my friends in that I didn't go gaga over the movie when it came out (or the Director's Cut). Visually cool, though.

*Except maybe for Firefly.

Space 1999 is maybe too niche, as well as the fact that like UFO, the first season was rather deadpan, and the second rather uncoordinated fantasy.

Blake's Seven had a sort of a reboot with the radio plays, and Anderson's other properties, despite being puppets, had more life to them.

Thinking in terms of working together solving problems as a group, exploration and such.

Battlestar Galatica. I'm drawing heavily on the newer one for inspiration for the Deepnight Revelation campaign I'm planning.

I suggest looking up the game Deadlock, for an extended selection of prequelish starwarships.

While my main Traveller inspirational media has already been mentioned up-thread, I find I keep going back to Harlock: Space Pirate

So good! The Space Marines are great fun!

I loved that movie! Thanks for the reminder, now I wanna watch it again!

or not, naturally it’s “no longer available” on Netflix in my region...

It's on Amazon Prime FWIW (watched it last night). The computer-animated movie was free w/subscription but the old 1970s show is a pay-for.

Well, I have thought about getting Amazon Prime as well for some time... feels like I’m playing Pokémon with streaming services (gotta catch em all!)

People usually get hung up on definitions of what is science fiction or not, but I still find the Star Wars movies, or the first three at least and maybe Rogue One and Solo, to be pretty good inspiration for Star Wars. And Blake’s 7. And Firefly, although that’s already been mentioned.

There is meant to be an upcoming adaptation of Azimov’s Foundation coming on Apple TV.

I use Mongoose Traveller for everything. Not just sci-fi.

I'm pretty done with Star Wars. I saw the originals as a kid in theaters. I barely got through Phantom Menace so I skipped the other prequels. Force Awakens was bleah enough to keep me from Rise of S & Last Jedi. Never saw Solo. I liked Rogue One okay because none of the original characters were in it (I don't count Vader cameos or CGI Leia/Tarkin).

After all,

:D

I enjoyed the first Foundation book but quickly tired of it after that.
