[houserules and mods] Character creation

So I figured I'd give a shout out, to see what kind of ideas people have, both for "official" MRQ, and for their own derivatives (since its OGL)

Rather than bounce from topic to topic, I figured I'd start with one spot. Character creation

Overall, this is one of the two parts of MRQ Im the happiest about, but if anyone does anything differently, I'd love to hear about it, and why.

The only change I'd make is ditching the "roll an extra die and drop" since I think RQ works better with average stats, the game doesnt really need uber-numbers.

I'd rather let people roll up three characters and pick which they like better.

So, talk talk talk! Both ideas to use, and what you did in actual games. But keep it to the first chapter of the book. Creation.

I'm running a game with a single PC so the high stats were very welcome. Also, I don't think one has to worry so much about difficulty with any version of RQ... combat is always deadly, no matter how powerful you are. It's also easier to make monsters and NPCs more powerful than in, say, the D20 system, because they are always rolling against their own stats. So a trollkin with an 80% chance of hitting you will hit you that much, no matter how powerful you are (dodging put aside, of course).

I much prefer it to the AC or THACO system, where weaker characters have no chance against stronger characters.

In general I agree - except with the all-important DEX --> CA attribute. But POW (for MP) and the mixture of STR/SIZ can also be important, too, for damage modifiers and even the CON/SIZ match can be useful for warriors (admittedly less so).

I've done that, too. I tend to run from a concept first, e.g. "what shape of character are you looking for?" and then allow the dice rolls to fit that. For example, I allow the players to pick any of the three/four dice they rolled, so if a character is looking for a sneaky character they have a bit of a better start. Any results 10 or below can be rerolled, if they wish. Same-dice characteristics can be swopped around.

If the character is the wrong shape completely I allow two or three complete character rerolls until they get a character that fits the concept they're looking at. It's a game, and if the player's need a particular shape for their characters then I'm to oblige.

That said, some of my players like doing it the other way - just generating a character "raw" and playing and running with what they get with minimal modifications.

Obviously, I tend to use the Complete Character process for the rest of the chargen as that's what I was using anyway.

I use character creation pretty much straight up. The only thing I do is allow not according to the book is allow characters access to Theology(specific god) and Sorcery rather than Runecasting for appropriate characters.

I was very impressed the first time I rolled up a character. It went very fast and when I was done I had a what looked like a RQ character.

My first Runecaster took a long time hunting down what runes gave what spells - I made a table of spells by rune that I posted here and to the wiki. It contains only the spells from the SRD's though - not Cults or any other sources as they are not open.

And, by the way, the section on Backgrounds and Professions in the Spellbook covers this much in the same way that you did, Rurik.

Again, you earn my respect as an RQ gamer. :)

Well hopefully you can put a bug in the ear of the right person about including a couple of Sorcery and Divine skilled backgrounds in Deluxe RQ. Now that all the Magic Systems are going to be in one book, it would be nice if there were appropriate backgrounds.

I may just start a thread on ideas for Deluxe RQ...
