Yeah, that kind of bugs me. Weapons - no matter what the mounting - should take up some displacement. With a turret weapon, you're paying for the turret and the weapons mount inside it. It feel like I'm getting something for free.
I had that discussion during beta. Get used to it.

Also, a fixed mount can only fire in one direction - does that also count for missiles/torps, or can the missiles/torps be fired in any direction and they will maneuver towards the target? Does being fired from a fixed mount affect the range of the missiles/torps?
The only limitations in the rules are in dogfight and no point defence from fixed mounts.
I'm ok with firing missiles in any direction, the missiles are capable of astounding acceleration so it does not really matter much in which direction you launch them. There's even a scene in the Expanse showing that.
The rules state this about Firmpoints:
A weapon mounted upon a Firmpoint has the following
changes applied to it.
• Weapons of Medium range or less are reduced to
Adjacent range.
• Weapons of greater range are reduced to Close range.
• A weapon on a Firmpoint may not have its range
increased beyond Close by any means.
A clarification as to whether 'weapon' applies to missiles or torps would be very nice.
