Half Price SST

Mongoose
First up, Hello everyone, first post noobie here.

I've been looking to get into SST for a while now, being a 20 year veteren of GW systems and more recently Urban War and Warmachine.

The other day I noticed both Forbidden Planet and Travelling Man in Newcastle(UK) have reduced all Starship Troopers stuff to half price in anticipation of the new pre painted releases.

As these are both chains thoughout the UK I expect the other stores have done the same.

A bargain not too be missed especially as I'd rather have them unpainted anyway. Just bought:

Boxed Game
King Tanker Bug
Plasma Bug
Mantis
Couger Exo Suits
Nighthawk
Bigfoot

should keep me going for a while.

Have just started putting together the Plasma Bug, its HUGE!, the King Tanker weighs a lot so I expect it to be a monster too.

Anyone else gonna take advange of this?

PS, is the hardback rulebook worth getting if you already have the book from the starter set?.

Cheers

Just to tell ya now, the king tanker isn't that big.. It has metal parts... and plastic... I suggest lookin at the instructions, Because it can get REALLY confusing. And I'm also guessing your going to be playing as Arachnid.. Kudos! :D I am arachnid.

Na, King Tanker IS big.
Not bigger than an ordinary Tanker but 8" in fact isn't that small.

For painting your bugs I suggest trying a special color sheme and not these ordinary anyone-has patterns. I remember someone having Ladybeetle Bugs here, they are indeed an eyecatcher.
It's up to you whether it's shining bright (like my yellow-red ones) or more an obvious camouflage (desert yellow, rock grey, moosgreen-earthbrown).

You can even do them in bright shining blue if they live on a desolate, dry planet with vast kobalt silica deserts.
Of course, if you are doing something such special you also need to build appropriate terrain.

thanks for your replies.

Yup, Newcastle Upon Tyne (well Gateshead actually), I dont play games too often and when I do most of my mates just play WFB but i really enjoy the painting and collecting part of things. If anyones in the area though, lemme know, I'd love a game and am about as far from "Powergamer" as its possible to be!

My friend and I have talked for a while about playing SST as we're both big fans of the moive, I've read through the rules and think they seem fun, I've gone off 40k over the years although Urban War is still fun (try it!).

I'm not exclusively clollecting bugs, at the moment I'm trying to build both sides, its just the Skinnies that dont interest me.

As for painting, I wanna start by painting them ala movie/tv show, being thats what we want to recreate, in future though I may try some other schemes.

Started painting the Plasma last night, I mounted it on a base though, I always think models look better that way, it also helped balance the thing, I found it very back heavy.

I've just about painted the Bigfoot, now that is a nice mini, looks kinda "real" if you know what i mean. Will post some pics when I get some completed.

The Cap troopers seem a pain, its fitting the gun into the hands thats causing me grief, I've downloaded the guide, any other tips?

Cheers

oh, ps I watched SST 2 for the first time yesterday, not half as bad as I feared, the only bit I really thought sucked was the way the guns fired like a light pen!

definately glue the gun into the right arm first, then shave off part of the chest, should fit fine after that.
Javelin: it's a lot more flexible if you build the arm out a bit, so it's further from the torso, lets you position it better.

I'm in sunderland, three of my lot are gateshead :)
We've just started urban war too, regular SST players though.

Hi there Sleazy (and you other kids from sunderland).

My group has just gotten into SST too and we hail from the Newcastle Heaton area. Do you guys have a regular Venue? Currently we just play at home on a modest 6x4 board. Great Terrain though! If yer interested then we'd love to add some extra players. Variety is the spice of life they say!

:)

sounds great, Heaton is easy enough to get to, havent had a decent game in ages, dont have a venue, my mates just tend to come over to my flat with beer and pizza.

Lemme know more, i'd be up for a game.

Nothing wrong with beer and Pizza... unless it's american beer  ( could we get a greeen one of these)

nah no American beer here, Aussie or Canadien usually (Fosters or Labbatts).

Been working away at putting these things together, couldnt resist buying some more so got a box of WASPS, the Roughnecks, Burrower Bugs and the MI and Roughnecks army books.

Just need to track down a copy of the Arachnid book now. oh, and an Overseer Bug, oh and a Brain bug........

I get paid on Thursday so I hope there's some of it left as Both my MI and Bugs could use some reinforcements.

I've also been looking to add the Skinnie Militia and Raiders to my collection love the figures, best in the range if ya ask me. From what I've heard it may be best to use the core rulebooks stats rather than use the unbalanced rules from the Skinnie book. Any Comments Lads. Is it still worth buying the Skinnie army book, or should I wait for SST Evo?

:?

well both shops seem to have a lot of Skinnies left, Travelling man has loadsa the boxed sets, including the general and guard, slaves, skimmers, heavy skimmers plus others, not being a fan of Skinnies I didnt take it all in but it looked like most of it.

Fot Mi and Arachnids theres boxes of 18 Warriors, hoppers, blasters, mantis, thorny tankers, the 8 per box sets of MI. TAC flying things, support missiles, bug fields, neo dog squads, heroes of the fed set, micro support weapons, marauders, female MI and of course the starter sets.

It seems to be being snapped up though, not just by me either, both shops are pretty good if you want stuff put aside till pay day, just ask.
