Gorn models

Target

Mongoose
Just been flicking through the Gorn & Kzniti???
I'd be fairly embarassed as them with ships looking like that.
Definately won't purchasing them. I presume thats the way the old Starfleet models looked like.
Surely they should of let Mongoose make better models. Thought the Feds had circles with engines attached thing.

Part of Mongoose' contract with ADB - and, through them, with Paramount - is that Mongoose's miniatures cannot differ significantly from their ADB originals.

However, if you *want* to proxy a Gorn DN with a Cylon BaseStar or whatever there's nothing to stop you. Just make sure you warn your opponent.

This ships are designed for use with ACTA: Star Fleet. Federation Commander and Star Fleet Battles. It wouldn't make sense to re-design ships that have been designed that way for decades.

Pretty mush these models benefit from greater detail and slightly larger size but the appearance is more or less set in stone. These are technically NOT new models at least as far as deign is concerned.

Only thing I'm disappointed by is that they didn't shift back to the old-style Gorn engine mountings. TFG and ADB used to produce them as multipart models with the engine pylons connecting to the top and bottom of center of the rear saucer. Much, much more stylish than current engines-at the center designs, but they couldn't cast the as one-piece models that way so the change was made. They were also remarkably long ships (much like the early Hydran Ranger) because the warp nacelles stuck out so far behind the ship, but neither that nor the casting issue should have been a factor on the Mongoose designs.

Stupid contract saddled us with the clunky "Edsel" Gorns when we could have had stylish "Mustangs" instead. Pfui. :)

Well, I'm sorry you don't like them, but I quite like the Gorn ships.

Kzinitis I've never quite liked quite as much, but after 30 years I'm used to them.

Starbreaker - I got a feeling the engines being slid back is going to be a fairly easy kit bash.

You think? They look like one-piece castings in the photos. If they're seperate, the "old school" look could be doable. Tried that once on the ADB ones, nearly impossible. Had to rebuild half the hull to hide the damage I did getting the engines cut loose and remounted, and even they they didn't look right. Just not worth the effort - I don't dislike the current mountings that much. :)

There was debate on the Gorn engine mountings, and one of the main reasons is that if the engines were mounted the old way they'd be TOO long to game with, therefore the engines went in the middle as on the revised ships.

Gorns actually did some fairly clever design with their ships. Many were built with just the front bubble but all were designed for the second (rear) bubble to be easily attached, making the ship a new class entirely. For example:

DD + rear bubble = BDD
CL + rear bubble = CA / CC / BC (with refits)
HDD + rear bubble = CM / CS

So it doesn't make any sense to mount the warp pylons on the rear bubble because in a great many cases that second hull bubble just wasn't there when the ship was initially built.

For my part, the two minis from those fleets that stand out the most for me in 2500 form are the Gorn CM and Kzinti NCA; both have a decent look in their own right, and each of them show a logical progression from their war cruiser counterparts (the Gorn HDD and Kzinti CM).

I've always loved the Kzinti ships since my SFB days in the early eighties (being a Larry Niven fan certainly doesn't hurt either, even if they aren't quite the same species in the SFU).

Ship design aside, the look on your opponent's face when you drone spam his favourite ship is always fun

I find the Gorn models quite interesting but Sadly really don't like the style of the SFU Kzinti.

I did think the Narn ships would make good Gron warships ;)

That's exactly how I came to get into SFB back in 1982. Although I always think of *my* Kzin as Niven's Heroes rather than the rather watered-down SFU version.

Yes, yes, I know my SFU history as well as anyone, been playing since SFB came in a ziplock baggie. Engineering-wise, center mounts make more sense. That doesn't change the fact that the original "longtail" sculpts were damn sexy ships, and very intimidating to boot. They're part of the canon whether ADB likes it or not - trying to deny it is like Lucas pretending Greedo shot first. :)

We'll see how a conversion works out, maybe these will be more amenable to it.
