Hsunchen are humans that turn beasts. Minotaurs, Centaurs and Ducks are half-men, half-beast, and do not change shape. Well, ducks are not half-men, they are all-ducks, but they certainly are not Hsunchen.
OK the Main Glorantha book list Hsunchen as Beastmen, and on the last part of the section, it says that there are other beastmen that retain thier shape permanently, such as Minotaurs, Centaurs, and Ducks. So, I have always understood that to mean that the latter three are Hsunchen.
Geez! Was it Robin Laws who wrote that misleading paragraph? How I dislike these books that try and explain everything in "plain fantasy" terms...
No, they are not Hsunchen. If you re-read carefully p.6 of the GtSA book, you will notice that in the first paragraph Robin wrote: "Hsunchen are disparate tribes of hunter/gatherers worshipping a totemic ancestor, who can switch form between beast and man." This is the correct definition of Hsunchen, and does not apply to Ducks, Centaurs and Minotaurs: they are not hunter/gatherers, especially the ducks who dwell in cities, and they do not switch form.
