I think the area has to many backwards systems to make a 1000 ton ship a good idea, unless it was a jump-3 so it could just stick to the "best" systems. At that level we allso start to be a bother to the Biger shiping lines and they play dirty

Indeed, but that could be part of the fun

If the general concern is over mortgage then I'd suggest going with a far trader as-is. 10 state rooms allows us 1 per room and carry 2 passengers, 4 if they double up. Or, we take 4 state rooms doubled up, and leave 6 for whatever passengers. I suppose it could be dependent upon how many potential travelers we pick up. 64 tons of cargo would be easier to fill than 150ish. At half-n-half we're looking at 38,400 Cr of freight and an estimated 128,000 Cr of speculative (average). Total would be 166.4KCr
232.8KCr per month

Assuming we have 25% worth of shares (at some point I'll go back and tally), then we're looking at financing 38,539,125 Cr. That's a monthly rent of 160,580 Cr. If we manage a 10% discount for age, then we're floating 65% of the ship, or 33,400,575 Cr. Rent = 139,169 Cr

Either way, we're well in the black without patronage, more so with patronage (which could open up interesting adventures).

Eight pages of character generation . . . I never thought I would have this much fun PRIOR to actual adventuring! :D

DPSteve & Area 51: we already agreed and confirmed (somewhere in this thread) that player connections are in ADDITION to contacts, allies and such.

Zowy - I can't understand how your connections table works so I'm going to summarize Evan for clarity.

Evan Starletter
1 Enemy
1 Contact
1 Improved Relationship (not considered a contact or ally as far as I can tell but I suppose it could)
Connection w/ Nova to gain Gun Combat(Slug Pistols) skill
Connection w/ Bishop to increase Deception

If anyone disagrees or sees a mistake then please feel free to let me know.

Oh, and Evan acquired Trade(Chef) :x  from the Red Light skill package.

In that case, I figure that I have a connection to Evan through one of the two underhanded jobs I did (smuggling as an event or pirate as a career). This would likely be an interaction with him as marine if during the pirate career or as a thief during the smuggling era. I figure Alex spends 2 years a term in system schmoozing and trading.

Assuming you're cool with that, Chronus.

The other connection I'll make with Cris. I figure as a drifter he probably had a working passage at some point on the Fortune Made.

Again, assuming A51 is cool with that.

I work out skills in a moment, and edit the post.

I am cool with Cris working aboard the Fortune Made!
and by the way what pick skills are left from the red light package?
I do not think I NEED ANY MORE COMPUTER

I can do a an update to the background for Cris with your character as a mention, and I wish as a drifter that possible that every one that delt with ships and space port might know Cris as " oh here come the space poert hitchiker again every act like we are busy and no one mention an open state room" LOL
maybe something of Infamy
hey are you not that space hippie type of of comments
I mean just as a plot devices-

I have one ship share it not much but it helps I hope
also I hope to edge this character into more a information broker some day, sense he is got so many methods of aquiring information-
maybe even get the broker skill- I tried trust me it was always a miss!

Red Light Skill Package
Steward 1
Pilot (any) 1
Trade: Cooking 1
Medic 1
Advocate 1
Diplomat 1
Astrogation 1

so witch one of these is taken ?
I can go with Steward 1 or Advocate 1
even Deplomat 1 ?

First term was as a drifter who could Cris have run across- from that term Cris got an ally, could any one have gone with Cris on his adventure?
say 16-19 and half years ago?

Hmm. That was the second term of my merchant career, but all that happened there was good fortune. Perhaps you provided some insider information on whatever betting was happening on the Fortune Made.

As a side note, I'm confused as to how we're handling connections. I see most people in the beginning of the thread tying them to in-game contacts and allies. Now we're being told not to do that. Which is it?

I think that started when I used my last term rescue -event- and Cosmia's last term disaster -event- as an excuse to make a conection.....
You don't use up your NPC Allies and contacts. You just need to make up a reason you know each other. It could be something as simple as both of you geting skills at the same time and saying you had training done at the same place. Haveing events that mesh somehow or just make something up out of the blue :P

Both Artemsus and Rebeca have asked for Diplomat 1
Evan, for Trade: Cooking 1 .. i.e. ( Chef )
I could use Medic 1 or Advocate 1

What about a freighter with some sort of mutual subsidy? Maybe a corporate sponsor of some kind? It would have to be one that would not restrict our course like a sub merchant would have. Maybe a Promotional deal for the ship designer? Showing off the versatility of the design.

Downside is that crew would have to make (possibly horrible, but they could get more bizzare as the campaign goes on) some kind of promotional footage/infomercial saying how great the ship is, or may be even required to hit a qouta of regional orders for the ships among local systems.

The Traveller section for the game has been opened down in the PBP area.

I'll wait till the GM puts up the starting sections and headings he wants, before moveing over.

i.e.
OOC pre-game characters development posts
OOC and IC Ship buying and outfiting section posts
IC At the Atares starport / shipyard posts
Library data and picture link posts
ect ect
Things can be split up by system jumped to, or some other way organized to keep from geting to messy :?

I'm cool with it. The connections rule says a character can obtain up to two skills from connections. I already have two but I don't see why this should prohibit you from getting one.

When I get a chance, I may go back and add up all our ship shares. It seems like we've acquired a lot wherein we may not need any subsidies, sponsors, or patrons ... no?

I think that was more or less the option we have been given to have a Patron. Who will invest up to 20 ship shares. But the biger the investment amount, the larger their say on what the ship does and cut of the profits will be.

Edit: List of ship shares, please check my count?

David Swain: Scout ship or 5 shares, +6 shares = 11 shares
Rebeca Nove: 0 shares ( put can get us a patron to invest 1-20 shares)
Evan Starletter: 1 share
Cosmia: Lab ship ( 5 ) or 2 shares
Artemsus Bishop: Ships Boat or ? shares + 6 shares = ?
Alex Rowe: Free Trader ( 20 ) or 8? shares + 5 shares = ?
Cristofur Housey: 1 or 2? shares

If we all divert to generic Shares, we're at about 1/3 of the total, even without a Patron. If my Ship's Boat credit can be applied to a different small craft instead, we could be in slightly better shape. We could probably make the economics work on a 400 ton, J-2 trader work, something a little buffer than a standard Fat Trader.

BTW, why are small craft prices so high? A Shuttle is comparable in price to a Scout, which has a Jump drive.

Also, what is our objective/strategy here? Do we want to work existing markets, or try to open new ones? A Patron could be sponsoring us to do exploratory trading, open new markets, and secure trade agreements.

I am not sure. It's is a long seteled area, where most of the people have moved to the "best" worlds. So there are lot of backwater systems, due to them being unpleasent or low profit places to live? Allso a lot of lower tec worlds for some reason. Maybe the people don't like to much technology? Did a Cyber-empire control part of the area during the Long Night resulting in a long term tec phobia on many worlds?

Jump around trying to make money? See whats going on...

Rebeca can do her Performance art / Music thing...

The Scout ( me ) can do lots of system / world scans and back up the other ex-milservice types when they stick their noses in where they are not wanted ..

The Medic can do his research bit...

ect.

one where is this moving too? I do not want to lose this game because I can not find you guys!

two: I have one share, and I like to go with what we can manage as far as a ship goes

Three: I well do a complet work up of my character but if I can make connections with every ones character is that ok?

and i did not know we got skills for connections is that something new or is it in the book and I missed ?

Depending on how Gerzel allows my Free Trader shares to be used (general trader on the lines of a Free, Far, or Fat, or exactly just Free) we're looking at 46% (full value) or 34% (general value) of the value of a ship. I don't think financing is going to be horrendous.

As for where, it will go here.

We have 7 people now. We can make the economics work on a modified Fat Trader (add some armor, a J-2 or better drive, etc) or we could make do with a Far Trader of some sort. 46 tons of cargo is plenty for speculative cargo and some freight. If we want passengers though, I'd definitely start looking at the J-2 400 tonner.

Geting 2 skill pics, from makeing player to player conections is new for this edition of Traveller. It is towars the end of character generation. You can pick any new skill you want or add a level to a skill you allready have.

The BPB section it down towards the bottom of the forum. There was a Conan and something else there and our Traveller gane has just been given it's own sub-section today.

Cris always thought his parent where a little off, this whole thing about religion was just a little old fashion. Cris knew as soon as he had the chance he was going to be an adventurer and see the Galaxy. Cris would hang around the Spaceport on Antares 1 dreaming of great adventures among the stars and visiting exotic and Alien worlds, while hanging around the space port Cris meet Drixel Anuba < not real name> who filled his head with tresure and adventure in far off worlds Exploring ancient lost ruins.while at the space port he would come across many diffrent people Traders, scouts and Performers travelling the Galaxy. well as soon as cris could hitch a ride he was off to those so called treasure ladden Ruins and found more adventure and near death experiences then he could shake a stike at, or a snub noise pistol.During his Wandering years he Meet Alex Rowe a Free Trader who taught him one should never gamble with poeple with names like Gaweedo or Sharkface. once during his wandering he chanced up a street perfromer named Rebeca Nove, who later would become well know Entertainer on his home world, but wandering lead more often to working as a fill in Steward on many a ship just for passages. a skill was learned and there he meet people Like Artemsus Bishop and Cosmia very respectible people who had booked passage aboard a yacht he just happen to be tending too to gain passage to Meon3. this taught Cris he need to find another way to make a living, and sense he was infamas for getting shot at he figure that a profession life as a military person was what he needed,so as soon as Cris could find a recuiter Cris Joined the Army! and wouldn't you know it he wound up right in the middle of a revolt! that where he ran across a character named Evan Starletter. Cris was never really sure who Evan was or what side he was on but Evan seem able to make quit a bit of money off of the whole Crisses, but things got bad fast! Out numbered and out gunned Cris lead his platoon on ward to survival! relief arrived just in the nick of time, and believe it or not they considered Cris some kind of hero, and he became Lance Corporal Housey! then some one thought that he told his adventure so well they went and commisioned him as a Officer! Well Cris desided the army was not so bad and went another tour,So he got droped into a peace keeping mission Investigating of all thing tomb roberies from some religous temple! It was a no brainer the butler did it! well actually it was the priest but hey Cris got another promotion and now he was Captain Housey! Cris knew he could do better and went on to a Corprate organization who told him he made fine managment material. So Civilian life Cris was bound for on his home world. it was not hard you told people to work hard, then throw a party every now and then for something trivial and bam ! Every one thought you where Great! so the Corperation flurished, and Cris stayed around a few years, Cris got real good with computers and got every one to believe he was indespensible, till one day on his 38th birthday Cris realized he missed the Adventure and unknows of travel! so he gave noticed and head to the space port - what the hell there was bound to be some one who need his unique abilities!

>>>>rough draft three<<<<<<<
so can i HAVE THE STEWARD REDLIGHT SKILL?
and maybe raise my gun combat skill sense its an implant

Rebeca Nova Contacts and Allies

I used the charts on page 76 (If this was done by design, I raise a limb to the Mongoose team!) to generate my Remaining Allies and Contacts:

Ally: Eccentric Scientist: Dr. Henry Kalvin, Cyberneticist and Acoustic Researcher

Ally: Mercenary: Omar Alagon

Ally: Corporate Agent: Elise Ikurrgagik, General Products

Contact: Retired Fleet Admiral Ulak hault-Coggeshall, IN, Baron Zu 1 Alpha.

Contact: Rich Noble: Count Lluco Strel Harrison, Count Garadanina (County is Garadanina, Laqearhy, and Leipenwin)

Contact: Artificial Intelligence: Holst-Zeta-Tau, Located at Antares Cybernetics Research Foundation Academy. Nova at first was select to be part of the machine's music instruction program, but the machine began to "desire" her company more and more for political and "streetwise" discussions. It seemed curious as to how different groups lived in the sector on a day to day level.

Contact: Evan

Contact: Cosima

That's not a bad idea.

Alex Rowe Contacts and Allies

Ally: Free Trader: Nigel Brinewater (I didn't roll on this as I feel that it goes with the backstory and the event. I will roll if Gerzel requests it)

Contact: Bored Noble: Ezekiel haut-Gammon (High passenger during my tenure as steward's assistant)
Contact: Smuggler: Carlos Montiago, underworld contact

Connection: Evan
The Fortune Made was ferrying supplies to the green zone where Evan's Marines had made an assualt. While on-planet Evan and Alex frequented the same bar, developing something resembling friendship over the course of the week. Evan taught Alex the basics of how to handle a fire arm (Connect Skill: Gun Combat (Slug Pistols) 1)

Connection: Cris
I figure Cris was a working passage on his way back to Antares after the Army. That'll make both connections a bit more recent (as doing it when he was a drifter would make it 21-24 years ago). Interstingly enough it appears that his trip home coincides with Cpt. Brinewater retiring. We kept in touch over the next eight or so years as the corsair I was stationed on operated primarily in the Antares system. From my experiences with this diverse individual I learned a bit more about being self sufficient (Connect Skill: Joat 2)

Package Skill: Pilot (Smallcraft) 1

(Final Character Posting to come shortly, sans prior-history)
